nVidia 460.73.01 doesn't allow changing fan speeds

My GPU is a piece of junk 2080 that I’ve already mentioned before, it requires you to enable and run the fans manually. Been doing that for years now. I currently am on the latest kernel 5.12.0-1 and the gpu fans still don’t spin without user intervention, but it’s not just me and my GPU. I’ve seen other threads on the web about 460.73 breaking the ability to change fan speed.

With the new 460.73.01 nVidia update, now the nvidia-settings program will not allow me to change the speed of the fans, at the bottom left of the program I get an error “Failed to set new Fan Speed!” Yes, I’ve enabled Coolbit flag 4 and in the nvidia-settings app, the applicaiton itself doesn’t allow changing the fan speed.

So I’m looking for help to roll back from 460.73.01 or test some future version as 460.73.01 is unusable.

I added “–verbose=all” to those commands above and they resulted in the same output.

How do you rollback just one package or did you rollback the entire system? How do you do that? Or upgrade to 465.xx?

If you read what I wrote in the other thread I linked, 465 went on Testing branch, then it got rolled back to 460 because of people reporting issues.

Fan control was working on both drivers for me on kernel 5.10 and 5.12.

To rollback your whole system, if you do not create system restore point with a tool like Timeshift, you can’t. Simple as that. To rollback specific packages see my EDIT in previous reply.

Don’t have that. For some reason I’ve only 1 version saved in my cache, either I did that due to always backing up mysystem or Manjaro by default only sets it to 1 version in the cache.

My auto-backups have been off line for 3 weeks to fix my controller. thanks for your help. If testing doesn’t work I’m at a loss.

EDIT: You know 2 years ago, if this happened. I wouldn’t be able to boot. I’m able to boot I believe to the Kernel adding support for RTX 2 years ago.

I guess it is a bug from Nvidia drivers that may be fixed later.

For the packages cache, see you settings in Pamac, you may have set it to 1 there, default is 3 I think.

Are you talking about the silence mode of your GPU which is normal if the card doesn’t start to heat up? Many card don’t have fans spinning when they are not going to a minimum temperature. It starts to spin then after this minimum temperature is reached.

I’ll give them until my GPU hits 90 degrees, then I have to go back to Arch proper as I’m more familiar with that.

I thought it was this forum I mentioned that, my mistake. MSI GeForce RTX 2080 GAMING TRIO - it will not spin fans up on boot - never has. Right now they’re not spinning. Previous versions of linux were like a rat race updating the xorg.conf to allow coolbits asap to spin the fan up before the system locked up. 2 years ago I didn’t know what I know now which would’ve made it an easier time. Yea, they still don’t spin.

From manufacturer website it says under 60°C the fans won’t spin. Is that the case for you when temperature is above 60°C?

You’re brilliant to find that. No it did not spin when over 60 by default 2 years ago. Just tested it and they do spin when hitting 60! Thank you.

I just googled MSI GeForce RTX 2080 GAMING TRIO and went to MSI website, scrolled down and I saw I could expand the info box on the cooling system which gave the information :stuck_out_tongue:

So this is totally normal behavior don’t stress about not being able to set your fan speed for now, check later when Nvidia update comes to Manjaro.

Heads up! Drivers 465 are back on the Testing branch, I know I said don’t stress yesterday but if you’re still willing to test with these drivers… you can easily now.

Thanks. Tested and fans still not manually functional. I haven’t overclocked that GPU in Linux yet, but I did try and it didn’t work.

It also won’t accept the new speed for mem, gpu or change the preferred powermizer mode in the nvidia-settings gui.
