No sound with pipewire-pulse and pipewire-jack 0.3.19, even though the services are active

Some time before the recent Manjaro update that brought us Pipewire 0.3.19, I tried switching to Pipewire on my old test laptop and it worked fine for the most part but I went back to normal PulseAudio because of some slight annoyances.

Now after the update, I tried it again: I removed Pulseaudio and installed pipewire pipewire-pulse pipewire-alsa pipewire-jack (I also once tried the manjaro-pipewire meta package and it made no difference).
After a reboot, only ALSA sound works, but pulseaudio and jack don’t, and the Plasma sound try thingy shows no devices. The pipewire-pulse service is running, but it shows:

pactl info returns Connection failure: Connection refused
Jack also doesn’t work at all, even though pipewire-jack is installed and ldd /usr/bin/qjackctl | grep -i libjack returns libjack.so.0 => /usr/lib/pipewire-0.3/jack/libjack.so.0 (0x00007f6f0686b000)

Does Pipewire work for other people as a pulse / jack replacement? Am I doing something wrong or missing something?

I just tried the same thing the day before yesterday. It worked just fine, but it was a pain in the ass that it wouldn’t change sinks automatically when connecting bluetooth speakers, and multimedia keys would act silly and so I returned to Pulse.

For sure the status of the service wasn’t throwing that much errors, just some warning about RLIMIT_MEMLOCK size I. And pactl info showed fine like: Server Name: PulseAudio (on PipeWire 0.3.19)

It was in Gnome, which I think it’s more geared and prepared for pipewire at the moment, truth to be told. Maybe changing Phonon backend would make a difference? Sorry that I can’t be of more assistance myself.

Nope, the Phonon backend made no difference. I would have found it suprising if it did, since I don’t think it is directly responsible for Pulseaudio.

In case you haven’t solved this yet or anyone else stumbles upon this, check your /etc/pipewire/ folder for a pipewire.conf.pacnew file. In my case, I didn’t care about my old config, so I just ran this:

sudo mv /etc/pipewire/pipewire.conf{.pacnew,}

I should’ve paid more attention to the update’s output :slight_smile:
