No sound with most apps, exception: mpv Media Player

Hi, I cannot play any sound with Firefox or VLC. The only working app is mpv Media Player.

What is strange: after just starting the Ardour app, the other apps are working perfectly!

I am using Manjaro linux updated at 20:00 UTC today with Gnome desktop.

How can I get some diagnostic info, and how can I fix this different from starting Ardour?

Thank you in advance!

Please see VLC does not play (certain) videos under the Known Issues and Solutions section of the latest Update Announcement topic relevant to your system.

The item was first published in the 2025-07-12 Update Announcement thread – It is highly recommended that you always check these announcements for latest breaking issues that may apply to your system.

This is the relevant content:

This should arguably solve the issue for VLC, and as VLC also acts as a backend for other applications, likely Firefox too.

Naturally, let us know if this doesn’t solve the problem, and I’m sure a member of the community will offer to help when they are able.

In the meantime, please provide system information as described (below) to help others identify factors possibly contributing.

Regards.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit.

To that end, links are provided (below) - Please use them.

Be prepared to provide outputs from various commands when asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Waiting for others to blindly ask questions can be counter-productive – typically, nobody has a :crystal_ball: at their disposal – Instead, please help others to make informed suggestions, based on information you provide.

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form (preferred):

inxi -zv8

Required Reading

Sorry for not having read the recommendations. I append inxi output below.

I installed vlc-plugins-all with still no sound from VLC, no matter if aduio or video streams or files. Other apps without sound are Firefox and Chromium.

The output of inxi --filter --verbosity=8 is as follows:

Thanks and regards

Did you check that the “mute” buttons in the browser tabs were not activated? Forgive me if this seems a silly question, but it’s easily overlooked, and sometimes proves to be the case.

I recall a topic recently where installing ffmpeg apparently resolved a similar issue. Is ffmpeg installed?

Some more information might be useful for those who can dig a little deeper; please also provide the outputs of:

sudo dmesg | grep -E '(alsa|hda|sof|snd|sound)'
pactl list cards
pactl list sinks
pactl list sources

Those outputs may be helpful to someone reading.

Regards.

[Update] LC_ALL=C applied

ffmpeg is installed, browser tabs are not muted.
The funny thing is: If I start Ardour (just starting, nothing else), all sound problems vanish immedately.

The diagnostics output follows. I hope it is ok to include them as preformatted text, not as files.

sudo dmesg | egrep -E '(alsa|hda|sof|snd|sound)'

That’s a lot of output. I hope, someone can give me further hints.

Regards

You seem to be using a German locale, which I didn’t realise earlier.

Please edit your last post so that outputs of the last three commands are prefixed with LC_ALL=C so that the outputs are in English (as expected in the main English forum sections).

Example:

LC_ALL=C pactl list card

Cheers.

I have updated my previous post accordingly.

Possibly. @nikgnomic might have some insight, when he is next online; now that he’s been mentioned it should appear in his notifications.

So far, nothing has changed. Sound is not working.

Server-2: JACK v: 1.9.22 status: off with: a2jmidid status: off

 Server-3: PipeWire v: 1.4.8 status: active with: 1: wireplumber

To use PipeWire as default audio server, install pipewire-pulse to replace pulseaudio
and install either pipewire-jack-client to replace pulseaudio-jack,
or install pipewire-jack to replace pulseaudio-jack and jack2, and qpwgraph to replace qjackctl

I installed pulseaudio-alsa.
systemctl --user disable --now wireplumber.service

resulted in this message:

The following unit files have been enabled in global scope. This meansthey will still be started automatically after a successful disablementin user scope:wireplumber.service

The sound was working, but after a restart it didn’t.

inxi -Aa and aplay -L should confirm pulseaudio-alsa installed to set PulseAudio as default output

  Server-4: PulseAudio v: 17.0-43-g3e2bb status: active with:
    1: pulseaudio-alsa type: plugin 2: pulseaudio-jack type: module
    tools: pacat,pactl,pavucontrol
default
Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)

If sound was initially working wireplumber.service was probably stopped, but was restarted
automatically when system was restarted. Service can be masked if it ignores disable command

systemctl --user mask --now wireplumber.service
$ systemctl --user status wireplumber.service
â—‹ pipewire.service
Loaded: masked (Reason: Unit pipewire.service is masked.)
    Active: inactive (dead)

After masking wireplumber.service, sound is working even after a restart.

I don’t really know what I am doing, but thank you very much. Do you have a documentation link?

I will mark your previous post as solution.

ArchWiki - WirePlumber - Disable audio stack integration suggests disable wireplumber.service only, but service can also be masked if it is restarted when system is rebooted
