No sound HP Probook 470

Hi guys,
I,m doing this from my aunt’s aged care home. This morning my aunt heard a crackle and then no audio.
I am clearly out of my depth, all advice appreciated

This will take some time as I have to try and resolve the problem onsite, meaning several 30 minute trips to my aunt’s facility.

Boot with a Manjaro Installer DVD/ISO/USB and see if audio is working in the Live environment provided.

If it isn’t, then it’s quite possible that it’s a hardware issue;
but, not strictly so…

Let’s see if we can attract some attention from @nikgnomic who sometimes has deeper insight into audio issues.

Good luck.

It looks like your first audio server is JACK, based on your description of the laptop and use, do you really need JACK installed?

It looks like jack2 is required by a few key pieces of software:

pacman -Qi jack2

Manjaro ISOs include jack2 for professional audio so it is expected that inxi -Ax shows JACK is installed but not running
Xfce ISOs also include ffmpeg , ffmpeg4.4 and portaudio

USB speakers would avoid any complicated troubleshooting

I suggest check audio playback devices in ALSA

aplay -l

If onboard audio device is working normally, devices should look like this:

HW probe of Acer Aspire VN7-572G #339e62924f: aplay

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC255 Analog [ALC255 Analog]

If ALC255 Analog device is not shown, get more information about ALSA

sudo alsa.info.sh --upload

If ALC255 Analog device is shown and audio to headphone jack works, your aunt might be able to use external speakers or headphones with a 3.5mm jack

Intel Skylake was the first generation of systems with digital array microphones that needed Intel SST drivers. Later intel generations use Sound Open Firmware (SOF) drivers that are better supported

Thanks everyone for all the good advice seems like I was the cause of the problem, months ago I moved my Aunt’s $HOME dir over to a internal data disk.
I had done this to my own laptop but found after some updates, not everything was working correctly. With my laptop I just reinstalled manjaro to my SSD and fstab the data disk.
Now I will do the same with my Aunt’s, thanks again.
