No internet via wifi/ethernet/hotspot

Hey there,
my internet is not working since several days and I cannot figure out whats wrong. I tried some things I found here regarding this but unfortunately my knowledge of linux/manjaro is pretty fragmentary and I couldn’t figure it out myself yet. Some help here would be appreciated a lot!

Things I tried:

  • ping 8.8.8.8 | this is responding
  • ip6 disabled | no difference
  • NetworkManager.conf: wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no | no difference

I hope someone is able to help me with that - cheers

PS: Please don’t roast me in case something is missing here - I’m a newbie :eyes:

First, you’re running a kernel that is EOL (end-of-life) which means you must upgrade to a newer one. You can do this with the help of the Manjaro Settings Program. I recommend you install 5.15.

(Alternatively, you can do pamac install linux515).

Then, to your issue.
You can ping 8.8.8.8, so you actually have internet access but probably DNS is not working.

Did you set any custom options for the DNS?
Do you have any VPN?
Did you setup a firewall?

You are positive, that neither it works via cable/ethernet and wifi?

On Wifi, you’re getting an IP, so my initial guess with a misconfigured DNS is the most likely one.

Can you rule out router configuration issue and try connecting directly to modem after a clean reboot?

alright - but it’s hard to update if there is no internet :see_no_evil:

I already tried to use 1.0.0.1 and 1.1.1.1 as DNS. Does not change anything. But maybe I missed something here? All I did was changing Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) addresses only and added the two addresses. Did the same for IPv6 with the according addresses.

There is no firewall and there is no vpn active. BUT I used to have nordvpn and it might be connected to this problem. Because sometimes there was no internet available without turning nordvpn on. But this only happened sometimes and could be resolved with a restart. So when this issue occured i suspected nordvpn to be the problem first and got rid of it. But nothing changed.

Yep neither cable/ethernet or wifi work. I also tried to connect to someone elses router. Same thing.

Since you have a connection, it is most likely a DNS problem.

Flushing the DNS cache can be done by simply restarting NetworkManager.service.

Check also this file:

cat /etc/resolv.conf

If you do not answer to my complete satisfaction, I will roast you. After all, belly bacon is supposed to taste best when roasted. :yum:

Canibals live here too, so be careful

I restarted the service several times - nothing happens on this side. But your second hint did the thing.

cat /etc/resolv.conf

had the following content:

# Generated by NordVPN
nameserver 103.86.99.99
nameserver 103.86.96.99

which lead me to this entry: Internet blocked by Nordvpn killswitch? - Technical Issues and Assistance - Manjaro Linux Forum

It seems like NordVPN did not clean up behind it properly.

The solution was to run:

sudo chattr -i /etc/resolv.conf

to be able to change the file again and then delete its content.

Thank you a lot - I would have spent a lot more time searching for this.
