No Internet Connection on a new install of Manjaro

Hi,

i have just built a brand new desktop pc with the following components an Asus ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming Wifi motherboard plus an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X processor plus an ASUS Dual Radeon RX 7900 XTX OC Edition gpu

in my internet connections list i dont see the option for either ethernet or wifi even though i have both connected to the pc i have read that the network controllers are from Realtek im not a very technical guy how can i solve this?

Hi @NSS,

Please provide the output of:

sudo inxi -Farz

And

sudo mhwd --list

Note:

If can’t give us the info somehow, we at least need to know the model of the NIC or the Wifi adapter.

First thing to take care:
Install another kernel, either 6.11, 6.12 or LTS kernel. Afterwards, reboot.

Second step: Update your system:

sudo pacman -Syu

if needed, take care on pacnews. If nothing show up, reboot.

I don’t see a driver being installed here…

thanks for the help but how do i install another kernel?

Have a look here:

You can do this the simplest by the GUI tool for it. Or have a look here:

Looks like you got a Mediatek MT7927 WiFi Controller. I dont know if there is linux support at all.

Hi,

i went to the Manjaro Settings Manager and to the kernel list but only kernel 6.10.13.3 is available

Probably because of no network connection. You could try bluetooth tethering via mobile phone.

For a wifi connection there might be some router settings required to get it working but I agree to @AndyM7743, most likely no Linux support for this device.

MediaTek is apparently known to have problems with Linux, and I was unable to find any mention of it on Linux Kernel Driver Database: 'M' index so I have no other suggestions than trying an LTS kernel, 6.1 or 6.6 perhaps.

Regarding:

The only working probe I found of it was for Fedora, using Kernel 6.11. So try greater than that, or an LTS one might also work.

Now that I think about it, maybe the newer kernel would work for the MediaTek device as well.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

what is the less complex to solve ethernet or wifi if we could get internet connection going than we can maybe install new kernel or update the system and than maybe the problems will be solved

I guess ethernet, as starting point by bluetooth tethering.

If you get it connected start with installing another kernel.

It’s the same, I guess. You’ll somehow need to get internet connectivity on that machine.

ok how do i set that up i have an android phone and 2 other laptops one with windows 11 and one with manjaro

Click on the green marked link of my last post.

i have checked but bluetooth also does not work on my system

so wifi and bluetooth both do not work is it possible to do internet tethering via usb? and which cable do i need to buy?

If you are going to spend money anyway then rather buy a cheap mini wifi dongle for USB. You could use this until your builtin card is supported.

Yes.

A normal USB cable is enough. For example the cable you charge your phone with. It just needs to fit in an USB port on your Desktop, typically USB type-A or USB type-C and in your phone typically USB type-C or on older phones Micro USB
