No HDMI sound output option found 2

I am trying to play some video’s off my laptop on my TV, and the HDMI sound option is not showing in the pulseaudio volume control. There is no sound coming from the TV. I have played video using another laptop with sound from a different windows laptop so I know the TV supports this.

Normally I just plug my laptop in and the sound works, but this time it is not.

I tried the Arch wiki instructions, but did not get any sound.

Hi @RonaldDuncan

Some system context might be useful for those wishing to help. Please provide full system information using the following inxi command;

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

I’ve taken the liberty of leaving you the filtered command which obfuscates any personally identifiable information from the output. You might like to add this to your notes.

however when it try to set it

$ pacmd set-sink-port 0 hdmi-output-0
Failed to set sink port to 'hdmi-output-0'.

Any ideas welcome

I tried updating /etc/pulse/default.pa

and putting in

##rjd fix to try and force hdmi to load a hdmi is card 0 device 3

this had no effect at the end of the file, at the beginning. It changed the default as follows

pacmd list-cards

and

pacmd list-sinks

So the correct sink shows up, but no sound comes out an the gui shows an audio card with all setting grayed out.

I have tried different positioning for the

load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,3

within the /etc/pulse/default.pa

However

pulseaudio -k
pulseaudio --start

Does not restore normal sound even when I go back to the original
/etc/pulse/default.pa

I need to restart lightdm to get sound working normally again.

sudo systemctl restart lightdm

Putting the

load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,3

within the /etc/pulse/default.pa below the automatic hardware detection section

results in laptop speakers working, but still does not play on hdmi, although the hdmi section is now showing in the gui, and you can see the sound volume fluctuating as you play.

pacmd list-sinks now shows hdmi as an output although not called hdmi

pacmd (or pactl) commands to set the sink-port can use the sink name instead of sink number:

pacmd set-sink-port alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 hdmi-output-0

Sink port can also be selected in PulseAudio Volume Control > Output Devices tab
pavucontrol --tab=3

Archwiki - PulseAudio - Configuration

Configuration files

PulseAudio will first look for configuration files in the home directory ~/.config/pulse/, and if they are not found, the system-wide configuration from /etc/pulse/ will be applied.

Tip:

  • It is strongly suggested not to edit system-wide configuration files, but rather edit user ones.
cp /etc/pulse/default.pa ~/.config/pulse/default.pa

I tried this and got
No sink found by this name or index.

Had a look at https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/175930/change-default-port-for-pulseaudio-line-out-not-headphones looking for syntax of set-sink-port

pacmd list | grep "active port"
	active port: <analog-output-speaker>
	active port: <analog-input-internal-mic>

then looked at [Solved] PulseAudio can't remember default device after logout/login / Multimedia and Games / Arch Linux Forums

which gave me

pacmd list-cards
	profiles:
input:analog-stereo: Analog Stereo Input (priority 32833, available: unknown)

So good news I now have HDMI sound. So laptop and TV work together.

Just need to figure out how to make it work with out having to go to the command line so that hdmi is an option in the gui.

PulseAudio card Profile can be selected in PulseAudio Volume Control > Configuration tab
pavucontrol --tab=5
There is also a button to lock the card profile
