When I wanna type a ë, I have to type the key ¨ and then the e, so I got an ë.
This works well in Firefox, Thunderbird and other Programs, except Libreoffice and KDE-Settings.
In fact, I configured a layout of German (switzerland) in KDE Settings->Input devices ->Keyboard.
In the same same category, I tested my layou in KDE Settings->Input devices->Hardware->Test Area and no chance to get an ë, whereas it works well in Firefox or thunderbird.
It’s likely a different language pack that is needed
because:
the “ë” character
is not part of the german alphabet.
As far as I know, swizerland/swiss is a mix of french, italian, german - perhaps even spanish, but now my ignorance probably really shines …
I do not know which language the “ë” character is a part of.
Definitley not german, and pretty sure it’s not italian or french either.
As a swiss person - or as someone who wants to write that character
you’d probably have to enable (and generate) the appropriate locale
I know how to do that on a pure system level - but not how that would be done from inside KDE - or whether that is even possible.
locale
and how to generate and enable them - in order to be available should you happen to need them
is what one wants to look for, I guess
In fact, I am in Luxembourg and need it for writing Luxembourgish. We do use here a french/swiss keyboard as we do writings in french and in german. I will try to generate lb locales and give the hopefully answer later on.
Nope. It doesn’t work. I have now set my localectl:
localectl
System Locale: LANG=de_LU.UTF-8
VC Keymap: sg
X11 Layout: ch
X11 Model: microsoftmult
X11 Variant: fr
Perhaps it has something to do with the VC Keymap (Virtual Console I think)?
I have generated all locale with LU in it (fr_LU, de_LU…)
I have a fresh installation of Manjaro on my laptop. Here, all works as expected. I then have a ressource what values work for me.
My locales on the laptop:
locale 1 ✘
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE=“en_US.UTF-8”
LC_NUMERIC=lb_LU
LC_TIME=lb_LU
LC_COLLATE=“en_US.UTF-8”
LC_MONETARY=lb_LU
LC_MESSAGES=“en_US.UTF-8”
LC_PAPER=lb_LU
LC_NAME=lb_LU
LC_ADDRESS=lb_LU
LC_TELEPHONE=lb_LU
LC_MEASUREMENT=lb_LU
LC_IDENTIFICATION=lb_LU
LC_ALL=
localectl status:
System Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=lb_LU
LC_TIME=lb_LU
LC_MONETARY=lb_LU
LC_PAPER=lb_LU
LC_NAME=lb_LU
LC_ADDRESS=lb_LU
LC_TELEPHONE=lb_LU
LC_MEASUREMENT=lb_LU
LC_IDENTIFICATION=lb_LU
VC Keymap: fr_CH
X11 Layout: ch
X11 Variant: fr
I don’t know exactly how to configure these values on the other machine.
