The problem seems to be this:

Try adding fbcon=nodefer in kernel parameters at boot.
If it works add it to grub.

Unfortunately, this does not solve the issue.

What is also interesting is that the system is unable to reboot. If I want to reboot, I have to press the notebooks power button manually, which forces a shutdown.

It seems a Nvidia driver problem.
Try having a look here: Backlight - ArchWiki
However, it failed to write the ā€˜brightnessā€™ attribute.
You can start in single user mode (or with a live ISO if it doesnā€™t work) and remove the attribute as per the documentation linked above.

Why do you recommend single user mode? Couldnā€™t I just edit everything accordingly and then restart?

Maybe Iā€™m not familar enough with Linux but I didnā€™t find a way to remove the attribute in the documentation you have linked.

You said your ā€œdisplay remains blackā€.
The brightness could be set in several ways. I donā€™t know how it is set up on your notebook.

Ah, now I understand. However, I donā€™t think this is related to the display brightness but rather to the display not having any real output. I noticed the issue only when I wanted to connect via vnc and I couldnā€™t get it working anymore.

Anyway, I have tried a few other things like disabling acpi. With acpi=off I can see that it hangs on the Manjaro screen like so:

Interestingly enough, when I remove the quiet entry and also remove acpi=off again the output becomes more unreadable when it starts to hang:

Iā€™m wondering if the culprit isnā€™t the following line:

Dez 08 10:58:21 cptLegendary gdm[700]: Gdm: Failed to contact accountsservice: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.Accounts: Refusing activation, D-Bus is shutting down.

There is another thing I have noiced and this is the following process running at 100% utilisation all the time:

/usr/lib/Xorg vt2 -displayfd 3 -auth /run/user/1000/gdm/Xauthority -nolisten tcp -background none -noreset -keeptty -novtswitch -verbose 3

I have now tried both kernel 5.18 and 6 and the problem persists. The more time passes the more I think I should just re-install Manjaro.

try adding this kernel parameter:

acpi_backlight=vendor

also rerun update if there are any errors

also there is no longer any 5.18 kernel, it is end of lifeā€¦

I have tried this setting and the backlight error is gone but the problem still persists:

I think the backlight issue is a symptom and not the disease.

I think the kernel (5.18) was a typo and thus far I have tried those kernels:

  • 5.10.157-1-MANJARO
  • 5.15.81-1-MANJARO
  • 6.0.11-1-MANJARO

I have also deactivated Bluetooth, WiFi and the fingerprint reader, just to be on the safe side. Furthermore, I stumbled over a thread with a similar issue:

So, I went ahead and added ibt=off but it did not solve it on my end

looks like some graphics/nvidia issuesā€¦
post output from:
find /etc/X11/ -name "*.conf"
ls /etc/modprobe.d

also rerun update again, to see if there are any errorsā€¦
and why do you have only nvidia gpu? you have also intel oneā€¦ is the intel one disabled in bios? - if yes dont enable it, since you dont have installed the drivers for itā€¦ and also since you have lenovo, you can end up with a completely black screen if you mess with the bios settings related to gpusā€¦

Thank you very much, you and another user in the Level1Techs forum pointed me in the right direction:

sudo mhwd -li
> Installed PCI configs:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  NAME VERSION FREEDRIVER TYPE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          video-nvidia 2021.11.04 false PCI

This only lists the nividia driver and it I discovered (thx to the other user) that I had the onboard GPU deactivated. So, I activated it in the BIOS, removed the video-nvidia driver and installed video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime.

What Iā€™m wondering now though are those two things:

  1. Given that the driver has just been pushed shouldnā€™t the version say something different than 2021.11.04?
  2. Is there an easy way to test if the discrete GPU is working as expected?

the mhdw -li output shows that you still have only nvidia installedā€¦
it should show now the hybrid one + video modesetting (and maybe video linux)

you can install envycontrol, for switching between gpus, and thus test if nvidia is working:
pamac build envycontrol
switch to nvidia:
sudo envycontrol -s nvidia
it will prompt you for reboot, so do it, and see if you can boot normallyā€¦ if you end up with a black screen, its because of nvidia, and you have to remove from tty envycontrol and its config ā€¦

Iā€™m sorry my post was misleading because I copied the output before I switched driver. This here is the correct one:

> Installed PCI configs:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  NAME VERSION FREEDRIVER TYPE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime 2021.11.04 false PCI
     video-modesetting 2020.01.13 true PCI

Warning: No installed USB configs!

Thanks, I will give this a try!
