No Audio when Specific USB Input Device is plugged in

I have an odd issue with my new KDE Manjaro build (My old Gnome build is fine) where if I boot up with my USB Record Deck turned on then I get no sound at all, PulseAudio Volume Control hangs and KDE shows no devices at all.

If the machine is booted up already then turning on the Record Deck will then cause PulseAudio Volume Control to hang, but devices are already loaded. Turning it off makes it all wake up again.

I’m not sure what info would be most useful to enable help with this - To start with here’s an INXI (With the USB Record Deck switched off)…

This is the device that’s causing the headaches…

  Device-3: Sony PS-HX500 type: USB driver: hid-generic,snd-usb-audio,usbhid
    bus-ID: 1-3:14 chip-ID: 054c:0baa class-ID: 0300

Hi there. Forgive my probably obvious suggestion but have you tried an older kernel? Maybe you need 6.1. & it’s a shot in the dark but the first thing that came to mind. I trust you get it sorted soon. More power to you, Ruziel

Running both can result in issues, because pipewire also have pulseaudio builtin for example.

If this turntable is used on a Windows or MacOS system, does it work without installing additional proprietary drivers or software?

If the device is not plug-and-play on a proprietary OS it is not likely to work on any Linux distribution

System data is showing 7 USB devices all connected to one USB 2.0 Hub

I suspect that either:

  • USB hub may not be able to supply enough power to initialise all 3 USB devices
  • USB hub might not have enough bandwidth for audio data with sample-rates > 96kHz
  • One of the audio devices does not like sharing the same USB hub as other devices

I suggest you unplug the Microsoft webcam and Cambridge Audio amplifier and see if the device works any better without competing USB audio devices

If the device is still not working as expected, try removing other USB devices or using USB 3.0 sockets

I haven’t had any issues with Windows or my other Manjaro installation (which is running a different Kernel (5.15), so @ruziel may be on to something. I’ve actually recorded from it on both those OSes with no problem. I think I’ve got an RT kernel installed but inactive for studio work so I might try to replicate on that. Are there issues with 6.1? This partition was recently built so it’s just the kernel it was installed with.

@nikgnomic - Pulling out devices doesn’t really help much (It’s sort of what I’m doing at the moment, just pulling the record deck) - The only thing that can reasonably be disconnected is the Camera. It does give me headaches with MS Teams sometimes so that’s worth a try to see what happens. Power is definitely not an issue, as it works everywhere else. One of the monitors is new though so that may be throwing a spanner in the works with it’s USB Hub.

@megavolt - This is how it came installed on the latest Manjaro build - I’m not sure on the details here - On my older partition I’d gone through a whole switchover from PulseAudio to PipeWire. I may need to revisit that. Is there an easy way I can figure out what the core audio system is trying to run on? If it is trying to run both in parallel rather than PA over PW that would be nasty.

This is working now - The only thing that’s really changed is that I’ve flipped around my monitors so the DP one is now using HDMI and vice versa.

As far as the audio chain goes, the only difference that makes is that the DP Monitor has the second output speakers on it rather than the HDMI screen.

The USB chain is unaffected.
