No Audio Devices Shown After Update

So I was out for roughly 2 weeks, and when I came back (today) I updated everything to the latest version. The only problem I am having is that no Output / Input Device are showing, although the sound is coming out of the selected device. Any idea on how to troubleshoot this? Been at it for a couple of hours with no luck. Another somewhat farfetched possibility would be that I added a bluetooth usb dongle around the same time, which made me install a software of its own: htt:ps://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/USB-BT500/Linux_BT_USB_v3.10_20200302_8761BU_BTCOEX_20190327-0202.tar.zip

Can you run:

mhwd -lh -d --pci

So, alsa has found your devices, so it is a problem with pulseaudio or the KDE GUI. Someone who uses KDE could help better. Maybe better add the kde or plasma flag to be clear.

did so, thanks.

On an additional note, indeed it seems to have something to do with the GUI, given that the command

pacmd list-sinks | grep -e ‘name:’ -e ‘index:’

outpus:

*index: 0
name: <alsa_output.pci-0000_0a_00.1.hdmi-stereo>
index: 1
name: <alsa_output.usb-Kingston_HyperX_Cloud_Flight_Wireless_Headset-00.analog-stereo>
index: 2
name: <alsa_output.pci-0000_0c_00.3.iec958-stereo>

which are my currently connected sound devices. And if I change them manually the sound works properly on all of them, using: pacmd set-default-sink *index number*.

So right now I can see the devices and change between them through the command line.

I understand it’s not a very good solution, but I created the following shell script to make it a little easier on you:

#!/bin/sh
while :
do
echo "Which audio source would you like?"
echo "0. hdmi-stereo"
echo "1. Kingston_HyperX_Cloud_Flight_Wireless_Headset"
echo "2. iec958-stereo"
echo "Enter a number below (press ctrl+C to exit):"
read CHOICE
pacmd set-default-sink $CHOICE
echo "You're Audio Output has been set to $CHOICE"
echo "Press enter to make another selection."
echo "Otherwise, press ctrl+C to exit."
read NOTHING
clear
done

you will need to save that as whatever-you-want.sh

then:

chmod +x whatever-you-named-it.sh

then you should be able to go to where you save it and run:

./whatever-you-named-it.sh

I apologize for all the editing.

This is my first time posting that much shell code on this forum lol

I am going to post this on github and put the link here. I will continue to improve on the code to make it pull the current input/output status.

since you’re at it, you should replace the initial static options by:

pacmd list-sinks | grep -E “name:|index:”

edited script to:

#!/bin/sh
while :
do
    pacmd list-sinks | grep -E "name:|index:"
    read CHOICE
    pacmd set-default-sink $CHOICE
    clear
echo "Your Audio Output has been set to $CHOICE"
    echo "Press ctrl+C to exit."
    echo
done

Thank you! I will change the code in the repo later today.

An improvement to your improvement to clean up the text a little.

#!/bin/sh
while :
do
pacmd list-sinks | grep -E "name:|index:" | sed 's/<//g;s/>//g;s/_/ /g;s/alsa output.//g'
read CHOICE
pacmd set-default-sink $CHOICE
clear
echo "Your Audio Output has been set to $CHOICE"
echo "Press ctrl+C to exit."
echo
done

FYI: this seems like a widespread issue currently. See this thread (remove the ! in the URL):
