I don’t know if this is the right place for this or the Ardour forums but…
I cannot seem to get any audio into Ardour. I can hear my synths and drums. I appear to have no inputs in Ardour.
When I start Ardour selecting ALSA works as you would expect but obviously I hear nothing but Ardour. Pulseaudio seems to have no inputs at all. Jack tells me “could not reconnect to audio/midi engine” and I don’t have the option to select pipewire in Ardour.
How do I actually make Ardour use pipewire?
If you need any other information let me know.

Please post pacmd list-sinks
on console.
pacmd list -sinks = command not found
In case of typo I also tried,
pacman list -sinks = invalid option ‘-s’
loose the space / get rid of the space in between list
and -sinks
just copy / paste:
Keruskerfuerst:
pacmd list-sinks
still get command not found
no, you don’t
try again
I just missed the last character while I myself copy/pasted … and remedied it while you objected …
pacmd list-sinks
if neither
pacmd
nor
pacmd list-sinks
is known to your shell
then you have some other quite serious problems
which pacmd
/usr/bin/pacmd
Either your $PATH
is set incorrectly, so that the binary can’t be found
or the program is not installed / present in the first place
which should not be the case.
I don’t have that. I checked my snapshot just after install didn’t work their either.
No pictures, please!
post text - terminal output is easy to copy/paste …
pacmd
or, more precisely:
/usr/bin/pacmd
is part of the pulseaudio
package
If you don’t have that command available, you don’t have pulseaudio
installed.
Why?
I don’t know why. That’s probably why I’m here. As far as I am aware, I installed Manjaro with Plasma, figured out some graphics issues then installed Ardour and yes other things like GIMP Krita Blender. and keep in mind Ardour lets me choose pulseaudio and I can hear ardour so…
I don’t know what would have changed that from the base install. I can clean install on a separate drive and see what happens with clean Manjaro.
The only thing I do know is:
in a standard unaltered KDE installation
the command pacmd
is available
I’m not a musician and do not know anything about ardour
but I can’t imagine why it would suddenly lead to pacmd
(or, by extension, pulseaudio
) not be there anymore
For possibly educational purposes I will now install ardour in this KDE / Plasma VM …
and after this (10 minutes later)
pacmd
…
still works
I just installed on new drive
pacmd command not found

I’m going to try installing ardour on this clean install and see what happens.
ALSO one major difference I just noticed the first inxi output had
Server-1: sndiod v: N/A status: off tools: aucat,midicat,sndioctl
I don’t know what that is but the clean install does not. don’t know if it matters.
I don’t know how my install of Manjaro is somehow different.
From downloading it from the Manjaro website, I click Get Manjaro, x86-64, Plasma - Full, torrent download I used Rufus on windows to make the USB, plugged into the live environment, connect to wifi, go through the install choosing keyboard timezone drive, reboot, check pacmd, command not found.
I don’t know why I would or wouldn’t have it. I understand not having it means I don’t have pulseaudio, but also everything tells me it’s what I’m currently using ardour says pulseaudio and inxi says pipewire-pulse. not to even mention when I try to use JACK with Ardour it sayscould not reconnect to audio/midi engine
I’m just very confused as to why fresh installs of everything doesn’t work.
Maybe this is more of a pipewire issue?
I don’t know enough to really do much other snapshot and poke around if something changes I’ll report back.
I don’t know either - mine is a about half a year (kept current) KDE installation from a minimal image
in a VM
Same result is in a Xfce4 installation in a VM.
… as well as in a System on actual hardware - currently Linux Mint (not the current version)
So:
I don’t know …
well I don’t know about Linux or Manjaro but I can tell you I’m back to my normal install and tested Audacity. It picks up pipewire just fine can record and listen to playback while still being able to hear firefox.
Whatever differences between and new download or your updated VM are now kind of beside the point. Pipewire is working.
I will now move to the Ardour forums and see if anyone there can help.
Thanks for trying and sorry if I confused you with all of this. If I find a solution I will come back and post it so it is here for future reference.
Somehow, you are running pipewire
.
Continue this way…
I figured it out. I tried out Reaper
as well and like Ardour
couldn’t get audio in. While Audacity worked just fine.
Short answer:
pamac install pipewire-jack
Long answer:
Current stock Manjaro Plasma doesn’t use pulseaudio
it uses manjaro-pipewire
which, by default, comes with pipewire-alsa
and pipewire-pulse
which are intended to connect to any software using those standards.
Audacity works because it uses portaudio
as it’s audio API which supports pipewire
Both Reaper
and Ardour
do not and therefor must rely on either pipewire-pulse
or pipewire-jack
The latter being the solution in my case.
