New problem: xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin not working at login

My google fu has failed me. I also searched on here to find something similar but came up zilch. If this was covered in another post… please point me in that direction.

When i first log in, the xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin on the panel does not work. It says not connected to pulseaudio server. If i remove it and readd it back to the panel, it works just fine. Just started the last couple of weeks. Getting annoying having to fix it every reboot.

I looked to see if something else was taking it and i came up zero. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin. Still is happening. Anyone have an idea how to troubleshoot this? I am rather advanced in linux, but this one got me stumped. it almost seems like it is starting before the pulseaudio server… but that is just a guess.

If you click on Audio mixer… does Pulseaudio Volume Control ( 'pavucontrol` ) show PulseAudio is working?

Please post more information about your system

yes pulseaudio is working fine… in fact as soon as i remove and readd to panel the plugin, it works great

System data is showing 2 incompatible sound servers running

Sound Server-3: PulseAudio v: 15.0 running: yes
Sound Server-4: PipeWire v: 0.3.38 running: yes

PipeWire cannot support audio unless PulseAudio is removed and replaced, but it can impede PulseAudio functions

Use this command to stop, disable and mask PipeWire service and socket

systemctl --user disable --now pipewire.socket pipewire.service && systemctl --user mask pipewire.socket

OR

Install metapackage manjaro-pipewire to remove and replace PulseAudio

ran command you suggested… i want to keep pulseaudio. however after reboot, i still have the same problem. any other suggestions?

well after another reboot… seems to be working now…

had a hard crash (seems to be bug in current kernel 5.14). when it came back up, it wasnt working again. fsck was good.cant shake the feeling they are related somehow.

I cannot diagnose a digital system based on subjective perception

I suggest you check user and system journals for the previous boot to look for any error messages to show what may have crashed

journalctl --user --reverse --boot=-1
journalctl --system --reverse --boot=-1

Thank you …that is exactly the help i need. I need help diagnosing… that being said… running the first one (never knew about --user), I found somehting interesting in the output:

anything stand out?

I do not see anything to suggest a system crash; or any problem with xfce4-panel or xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin

I did have the panel crash a couple of times due to a misbehaving plugin, but that was before I switched to Manjaro

I do not recall ever hearing of a volume control crashing the whole system before. This is a PulseAudio related package so there would have been many troll-posts about it if it had happened

didnt crash the whole system… the plug in just says not connected to pulseaudio server. If you remove and readd the plugin, it works. But at every reboot, i have to do the same thing.

That lot looks quite bad honestly, if you insist on using Pulse then expect problems. It has been a rule of thumb since Pulse was introduced. SEGV: Pulse committed an access violation, trying to access memory locations that are no longer valid/available.

doctorx-manjaro pulseaudio[1780]: stat('/etc/pulse/default.pa.d'): No such file or directory

Pulse appears misconfigured too

I have Steam which plays fine with Pipewire. I also use pro-audio apps like Renoise, VCV, and Reaper, and they work nicely too. I don’t have Pulse, because of >8 years bad experience with that ‘sound server’.

It is a common misperception for things to appear more sinister when reversed
(even ELO did a backward masked track back in the day)

Data from earlier in the log shows that just before the core dump there was a non-Xfce thing happening
Activating via systemd: service name='org.gtk.vfs.Metadata' unit='gvfs-metadata.service'
This is a GNOME virtual file system to collect metadata from Nautilus
What is gvfsd-metadata? | askubuntu.com
That could be trying to take metadata from the panel plugin
so this might stop the panel problem

systemctl --user mask gvfs-metadata.service

The alleged misconfiguration is more a ‘not yet configured’ issue

PulseAudio v15.0 release notes explain that folder /etc/pulse/default.pa.d/ is for Linux distributions to add configuration changes
If Manjaro team add the extra folder in a future release this message will cease
But a user could get rid of the warning by creating the new folder

sudo mkdir /etc/pulse/default.pa.d/

I tried these… and it still is happeneing. Any other ideas? Anything else i can upload to help diagnose this?

I suggest reboot system and run this command to restart the panel

xfce4-panel --restart

If that can get the xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin working, the command can be added as a workaround in xfce4-session-settings

If the plugin does not restart with the panel, check the journal for anything related to xfce4 or panel

journalctl --all --boot | grep -E 'xfce4|panel'

If the journal data does not show anything about the panel plugin, use this command to find out everything installed on system in the last calendar month

cat /var/log/pacman.log | grep 2018-10

check anything installed prior to the time that the problem first appeared
especially any packages that are not part of Xfce

i did the xfce4-panel --restart… and now it is starting correctly each time i try it…
Thank you… but it makes no sense why it would start working with running that statment.

ok… i think i have it figured out… it isnt a system issue, but something is corrupted in my profile. I renamed my home dir and recreated it and the problem is not there. Ill just have to redo all my customizations again… Thanks for the help everyone.
