New install, no audio

I really appreciate having a forum to ask for help. Thanks!

I’ve been reading/struggling for a few weeks with no audio on a new motherboard. A buddy gave me a motherboard and the audio worked when he had it, although he ran Windows. I don’t have a spare Windows license, so I cannot confirm this, but I expect the hardware is OK.

I’ve tried every live distribution I can find (EndeavourOS, Ubuntu, Garuda) and none of them cause my audio to work, when I boot from them. My audio also doesn’t work when booting Manjaro KDE 20.2.1 live media or freshly installing (I’ve done this 8 times in the last two weeks).

So, I know this isn’t Manjaro specific but I hope someone might be sufficiently familiar to offer a hand with this. Alternately, I will pick up an external DAC because sound works perfectly when I connect a Topping D50s.

I’m trying to use onboard Intel HD audio and use an AMD video card to drive my monitor (video only).

Neither the AMD HDMI nor the Intel HDA show up as output options. If I remove the AMD video card, the onboard audio still does not work.

If I “pulseaudio -k”, the audio settings looks exactly the same with no onboard audio.

Looks like SOF is there?

Sorry for the brutal level of spam. I’m obviously over my head, here.

But, I just had a breakthrough. The sound is being routed to the front jacks. I just need to figure out how to path the sound to the rear jacks on the motherboard.

OK. It’s working.

I have no idea what I did to solve this.

It may have been related to, selecting my sound card, unmuting all channels in alsamixer (from root) and then shutting the system down. On restart, the correct sound card now shows in the KDE audio dialog.

To configure alsamixer, I selected and then unmute/level adjust.

I currently have “auto-mute” disabled.

I hope this helps someone. As you can see, I’m no expert. I just fooled with it until it worked, however, I’m happy to share my configs/experience with anyone who wishes.

Thank you for the opportunity to post and work through my own problem.

One last post.

Even though I have 2 channel audio, it only works if all surround channels are unmuted. For example, if I mute the center channel, all audio stops.

If you’re having trouble, I suggest unmuting everything in sight.
