New Install AMD FX-6300 Won't Wake From Suspend

I am a returnee to Manjaro - it’s been a few years since I was a user. After I was getting all excited about installing my favorite programs I remembered that last time I had an issue with sleep (suspend) so I’d better try it out. Wouldn’t you know it, no wake up!

When the computer powers back on again there is a slight screen tear on the bottom quarter of the screen, then that goes away and there is a black screen with an unblinking dash or underscore at the top left.

My motherboard is the Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3 and I’m running an AMD FX-6300 with 8gb of memory and a Samsung EVO SSD. I did a full disk encryption and didn’t mess around with the partitions (meaning that I got the swap that was recommended). The ISO is the most current. I ran updates but I haven’t yet updated to the most recent kernel.

I’m really hoping I can give Manjaro another go! Thanks for reading.

Hello @Standard_Mixture

Sounds like a GPU issue, but you didn’t mention which GPU you use.

Please share your system details:

and also the last journal (current one would be 0):

Sorry for the delay.

I’m not sure how to include the journalctl -b1 output, as it is very lengthy.

I thought that motherboard looked familiar. I’ve got the same one in my desktop machine. This may be a silly question but do you have the latest firmware for it installed?

It looks like there was only one BIOS flash update, which I ran years ago.

What about video drivers? I heard somewhere that video drivers are often the culprit. How do I experiment with changing them, is it a good idea? In Manjaro Settings Manager I see three choices:

video-linux (installed)
video-modsetting
video-vesa

I’m afraid in not entirely sure. I’m not running Manjaro on that machine. I’ve got a separate video card in it that’s using the default Debian driver for ati cards and it works as expected. I know that’s not helpful.

So, is anyone able to explain to me how to make a journalctl log? If I do a fresh boot to try a suspend the log should be short and sweet, no?

I read a thread on here where someone said they solved this problem with suspend by uninstalling kernel 57 (even though they weren’t running it). Does this sound reasonable?

quick and short:

journalctl -b1 | curl -F'file=@-' https://0x0.st

That is the last boot, current boot would be -b0.

Post the link here.

Okay, I think this is it, my last boot.

@Standard_Mixture

Could be possible that this is only a tearing issue. In this case i would try different parameter. Not sure if this helps.

Create and open a file:

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf

The copy paste there:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Radeon"
    Driver "radeon"
    Option "AccelMethod" "glamor" #legacy "exa"
    Option "DRI" "3" #legacy "2"
    Option "TearFree" "on"
    Option "ColorTiling" "on"
    Option "ColorTiling2D" "on"
Option "ShadowPrimary" "on" #only possible with "glamor" AccelMethod
EndSection

The changes here could cause getting a black screen at boot. So just in case, have bootable live disk ready to fix it. Also possible to fix it is by switching to another TTY: CTRL+ALT+F1/F2/F3, login and open the file with: sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf change to legacy.

I guess you have try some options and switch them if needed.

Seems to be a bug of the radeon driver.

Wow, that seems to have fixed it. Thank you so much!

Would changing the video driver in the Manjaro Settings have done the same thing?

No, you can’t change these specific options there.

I am glad that that it worked. Could you say, if you changed some options or did you just use what I suggested?

No options were changed. I just made the radeon conf file and all good.
