Network devices missing after Restart

Hi,

today i started my desktop as usual everything worked fine.
Shut it down to get lunch and got back after.
Starting the desktop and my Ethernet was missing.
I connect Wlan searched for updates (non where found).
Tried a restart now my Wlan device was also missing.
Added a USB-Ethernet adapter and googled a bit without results.
Restarted again now the USB Adapter did not work anymore.
Used another USB-C Adapter and found that a recent manrajro update mentioned NetworkManager( forum.manjaro org/t/stable-update-2023-02-20-kernels-gnome-networkmanager-kde-frameworks-firefox/134573 )
But that update is marked as stable so i think it cant break a system like that ?

Anyways so i got on and found arch wiki telling me to go sudo lspci -v
And what can i tell… no network devices where listed.
After another restart even my USB C Adapter is now gone.

I have no way of connecting the Desktop to Internet anymore and its dead now.
To not have those M$ Windows problems i switched to Manajro stable …

Luckly i have a friends Laptop today (which is where i am writing from) and my boss is not having any huge tasks today. Otherwise this “Stable update” might have cost me my job.

Now to the big question:

How to fix this?

with kind regards

PS: i am no Developer i am just a normal User (and no i wont install Windows again )

//EDIT1: sorry if i am a little heated but i saved a very long time for this not even a month old setup.
And chose Manjaro cause it got advertised as stable distro. I am really scared that my setup briked :frowning:

//EDIT2: Fedora37 live saw my pcie network devices so i guess hardware is ok.
Maybe the so called ‘Networkmanager’ really is the problem

//EDIT3: Looks like deleting everything in the NetworkManager config folder (+ ofc restarts) solved the porblem. BUT as always MAKE BACKUPS first  !

Since you can post, you seem to be still connected … somehow.

Provide basic hardware information - boot a live system to do it if you have to.

inxi -Fazy

(mind the formatting of the output when you post it here
use this button: </> )

so i downloaded the latest manjaro live image and either manjaro broke my hardware completely or the latest image has the same problem …
ill now download a live ubuntu to check my hardware.
If manjaro broke my new am5 board ill burst into flames :frowning:

To me it looks like this:

  • this is not taken from an Ubuntu live ISO boot
  • the file system is BTRFS - and everything is (essentially) completely full - no space left
    not good
  • IF-ID-2: virbr0 state: down mac
also does not look like a live system booted from an Ubuntu ISO

But if this is not the machine that has got the problems
the inxi output is … useless - to diagnosing the actual affected system

Please clarify what you provided here.

i thought i should go into manjaro and do your command (which is what i did.) than copied the result to a usb and posted it here.

As i wrote i now try to get into a live ubuntu to check if my hardware is broken.
If my English is bad i am sorry.

So:
this inxi was from the actual system - not from Ubuntu live ISO

still:
the issue seems to be that all the filesystems seem to be 100% filled up

which could very well be the source of the issue

I do not know how to deal with BTRFS - I have never used it.
It’s quite different to “normal” filesystems - different tools and procedures to deal with issues, too.

Someone else might know - I surely don’t.

yes
and if i understand the outpot correctly even there all network devices from my motherboard which where present today morning are missing now :frowning: no pcie ehternet and not pcie wlan. even the pcie network card which i use for my vm is missing :frowning:
the filesystem has over 444gb free space according to disk usage analyzer

… not according to your inxi output, though

BTRFS is a different animal - different tools, different procedures …

I do not know either way - I simply do not know the first thing about managing BTRFS. :man_shrugging:

@andreas85 seems to be very knowledgeable on this …

i dont get where you see anything “full”

Partition:
  ID-1: / raw-size: 681.22 GiB size: 681.22 GiB (100.00%)
    used: 264.19 GiB (38.8%) fs: btrfs dev: /dev/nvme0n1p2 maj-min: 259:2
  ID-2: /boot/efi raw-size: 300 MiB size: 299.4 MiB (99.80%)
    used: 608 KiB (0.2%) fs: vfat dev: /dev/nvme0n1p1 maj-min: 259:1
  ID-3: /home raw-size: 681.22 GiB size: 681.22 GiB (100.00%)
    used: 264.19 GiB (38.8%) fs: btrfs dev: /dev/nvme0n1p2 maj-min: 259:2
  ID-4: /var/log raw-size: 681.22 GiB size: 681.22 GiB (100.00%)
    used: 264.19 GiB (38.8%) fs: btrfs dev: /dev/nvme0n1p2 maj-min: 259:2

not even 40% are used from system drive even according to the output i posted here

also i dont get how a full usb or non system disk should cause missing pcie network devices …

right

misinterpretation on my part

sorry!

Let’s see then whether the network devices show up when booted from the Ubuntu iso

There only seems to be this one:

Network:
Message: No PCI device data found.
Device-1: D-Link DUB-1312 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter type: USB
    driver: ax88179_178a bus-ID: 2-2:2 chip-ID: 2001:4a00 class-ID: ff00

Kernel 6.2 is a release candidate and most likely might not have all modules available, maybe try a long term release kernel like 6.1 or 5.15.

installing this kernel was a last resort i tired after i had the problem.
at today morning i had 6.1.12 LTS

5.15 does not even support X670E / AM5 as far as i know

EDIT: i know got a Fedora live USB up and running (ubuntu did not work and i atm dont have a nerve to troubleshoot) but at least fedora can see and use my PCIe Network devices… so there is hope that the hardware is not bricked and it is a software problem (which calms me down a little).

but it still would be nice if it would be fixable… (and ofc wont have happend on a stable update)

i dont even have anything special.

Network from Motherboard with a vpn and a pcie addincard for my windows vm which is bridged.

no fancy bonding no vlan or anything unusual

We are currently updating networkmanager as 1.42.0 had some regressions …

that sounds like a possible culprit.

is there a rough eta on for the fix?
i can get another usb to network adapter from work and hope a system upgrade would fix the problem

Having a better look at your device USB3 devices sometimes have issues working on a USB3 port, did you try to connect it on a USB2 port?

the usb device is just a workaround. (which did work)
i need the pcie network devices to work

Can you paste the output of those commands bellow, the output above only has your usb adapter.

lspci | grep “Network”

sudo lshw -class network

it is empty the system does not see the devices any longer :frowning:

as soon as i use a new device it works until used. When used + restart it the whole pcie devices seems to disappear o.o

i read in the archforums that you can delete some config files.
I now have a old network card in and syncing my backups.

After that ill try deleting the config files in hope that the regeneration on restart will fix my problems
(if not i am really running out of network devices -.-)

You can try commands bellow, if you get nothing, make sure your device is visible in the bios, if is not then its not well connected or is a hardware issue.

lspci -v | grep Network

sudo dmesg | grep “failed to load”

sudo dmesg | grep “error”

Can you try without your PCI-Passthrough setup?
Most likely your devices are being used for passthrough and thus unavailable to your host system…
