My boot time is 2+ minutes

I dont know why but my boot time is 2 minutes, like the time from starting the pc and seeing my desktop light up is pretty long. Is this normal? I thought manjaro was supposed to start up faster than windows but its like way slower for some reason. How do I deal with this? I can post logs or some important info if you want.

Please don’t use invented abbreviations and run-on sentences. This is a support forum, not a social network or instant messenger.

Notice at least 4 volunteer forum members who are very knowledgable read your post, marked it with an :ok: emoji and passed on. There’s a reason for that. Help us help you.

How about you do a journalctl -xb snf look for fail or long time between actions.
That might give a start.

This may help as well:

inxi -zav7
and post that info. of course with the surround the output.

Post here the output of this command, and we can see which processes are too slow:

You’re using an EOL kernel (5.19), may be a good idea upgrading to 6.1 and then see if the problem persists or it’s solved.

I agree on the kernel. Either switch to a 6.1 kernel which will soon be LTS, or 5.15 which is LTS. No swap file or swap partition? I would recommend one or the other. You have a 5400 RPM HDD. I would consider switching to a SSD, if possible. You may be limited by the hard drive specs. Regarding the current issue:

NetworkManager-wait-online.service- I would try masking this
one and see how it goes. I always mask on a new install with no
ill effects with broadband service here:
systemctl mask NetworkManager-wait-online.service

ModemManager.service is for dial-up. Do you have dial-up internet? If not:
systemctl disable ModemManager.service

lvm2-monitor.service is only needed for logical partitions. Do you have logical
partitions? If not:
systemctl mask lvm2-monitor.service

Check status of systemd-journal-flush.service:
systemctl status systemd-journal-flush.service

A quick search of this forum should also help in sorting this out.

    ~  systemctl status systemd-journal-flush.service  ✔

Try and run these then reboot.

sudo systemctl disable NetworkManager-wait-online.service
sudo journalctl --vacuum-size=1G --vacuum-time=5d --vacuum-files=5

your sda5 is also taking a long time to respond, so maybe try updating it’s firmware or unplug it. I had for a long time occasional 5-20 second delay on bootup, and it was in initializing sd device, and it vanished when i realized to do a firmware upgrade on the drive.

The problem persists. I think I changed the version but nothing happened.

My sda5 is where I have manjaro, how would I go about upgrading it? Since I dont want to unplug it, because I want to keep using manjaro right?? Also I used the two commands u sent (one of them cleared 2.9 gigs of ram), but the boot time is still pretty slow, when I measured the time from pressing the button and the icons on the desktop appearing, it was 1:59.

post

systemd-analyze critical-chain

If nothing else, at least the network wait service should not take time now.

You could check sudo dmesg and look at the timestamps where the delay is if it happens in kernel

After that i don’t have other suggestions than updating the firmware on your sda drive. Though even before that things should not add up to two minutes of boot time.

edit: i might have been reading wrong the blame output, like others in this thread. The critical-path should show true delays any service causes. If your system spends 9 seconds waiting on your hdd to read data during the whole boot process, that is not abnormal if you have a slow drive. You might also want to

sudo systemctl enable NetworkManager-wait-online.service
    systemd-analyze critical-chain

The time when unit became active or started is printed after the "@" character.
The time the unit took to start is printed after the "+" character.

You probably can disable ModemManager.

that jump is clearly outside the boot process, as the timestamp is seconds since kernel started.

All i can gather is that everything seems to happen very slowly, and quite some places take significant time without any obvious debug info.

Once the kernel has booted and userspace starts to load, everything works fine based on analyze critical chain

Only thing i can suggest is to update your BIOS, as there were quite some errors related to it.

I found this online

Should you update the BIOS?

But before we explain how to do it, an important warning.

If something goes wrong during the BIOS update, your PC or laptop could be rendered useless. If there’s a power cut, or the computer gets turned off while updating, it could mean that it’s unable to boot at all. It’s unlikely, but not out of the question.

So, unless you have a good reason to, we’d advise you not to update the BIOS at all.

Valid reasons for updating include adding support for a new processor that you plan to install, to fix a bug, performance issue or vulnerability, or to add new features that you want or need.

Also it seems like its pretty complex for a guy like me.

complexity depends on the manufacturer. Many can be updated from windows, some from linux, and the rest need you to make an usb stick with the update.

If I were to update my thinkpad could I do it from linux or windows?
