Multi PHP version with apache-fpm and vhost

Hello all,

I am trying to create a web development environment with LAMP.

By following this tutorial I am able to achieve it. link
My problem is I want to user two php version like 7.4 and 8 for my multiple virtual host

I got some information from the arch wiki but not so elaborate or may be I am unable to get the idea from there.

My situation like similar to this problem from a arch forum but it is very old info.

Please anyone have any tutorial on this in Manjaro share with us.

I searched the net but got only with debian and redhat info but not arch or manjaro configuration.
Thanks

hi,
best for multi-versions is to use docker, for example this

Don’t have the time to write a tutorial, but I just drop my PHP configuration files for that scenario.

I guess you have the packages php (= PHP8) and php7 already installed together with php-fpm and php7-fpm and mod_proxy_fcgi like explained in the mentioned tutorial.

Create /etc/httpd/conf/extra/httpd-php-fpm.conf for PHP8:

<IfModule dir_module>
    DirectoryIndex index.php index.html
</IfModule>

<IfModule mime_module>
    AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
</IfModule>

# Redirect to local php-fpm if mod_php is not available
<IfModule !mod_php.c>
    <IfModule proxy_fcgi_module>

        # Enable http authorization headers
        <IfModule setenvif_module>
            SetEnvIfNoCase ^Authorization$ "(.+)" HTTP_AUTHORIZATION=$1
        </IfModule>

        <FilesMatch ".+\.ph(ar|p|tml)$">
            SetHandler "proxy:unix:/run/php-fpm/php-fpm.sock|fcgi://localhost"
        </FilesMatch>

        <FilesMatch ".+\.phps$">
            # Deny access to raw php sources by default
            # To re-enable it's recommended to enable access to the files
            # only in specific virtual host or directory
            Require all denied
        </FilesMatch>

        # Deny access to files without filename (e.g. '.php')
        <FilesMatch "^\.ph(ar|p|ps|tml)$">
            Require all denied
        </FilesMatch>

    </IfModule>
</IfModule>

Create /etc/httpd/conf/extra/httpd-php-fpm7.conf for PHP7:

<IfModule dir_module>
    DirectoryIndex index.php index.html
</IfModule>

<IfModule mime_module>
    AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
</IfModule>

# Redirect to local php-fpm if mod_php is not available
<IfModule !mod_php7.c>
    <IfModule proxy_fcgi_module>

        # Enable http authorization headers
        <IfModule setenvif_module>
            SetEnvIfNoCase ^Authorization$ "(.+)" HTTP_AUTHORIZATION=$1
        </IfModule>

        <FilesMatch ".+\.ph(ar|p|tml)$">
            SetHandler "proxy:unix:/run/php-fpm7/php-fpm.sock|fcgi://localhost"
        </FilesMatch>

        <FilesMatch ".+\.phps$">
            # Deny access to raw php sources by default
            # To re-enable it's recommended to enable access to the files
            # only in specific virtual host or directory
            Require all denied
        </FilesMatch>

        # Deny access to files without filename (e.g. '.php')
        <FilesMatch "^\.ph(ar|p|ps|tml)$">
            Require all denied
        </FilesMatch>

    </IfModule>
</IfModule>

Then just load one of them in your vhost config file:

<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName project.local

    DocumentRoot /srv/project

    Include conf/extra/httpd-php-fpm.conf

</VirtualHost>

@papajoke Thanks. At the moment I am not thinking to switch to docker but in the long run may be I will switch to Docker.

@Deano Thanks, I am going to try it and give you a feed back on that.

But I already facing a problem, when I try to add this code in http-vhsot.conf file it give me error.

    Include conf/extra/httpd-php-fpm.conf

I will post here more details about my config.

      	ServerAdmin webmaster@khandakershahi.local
        DocumentRoot /data/lampp/htdocs/khandakershahi
        ServerName khandakershahi.local
#	ErrorLog "logs/khandakershahi.local-error_log"
#	CustomLog "logs/khandakershahi.local-access_log" common
        <Directory "/data/lampp/htdocs/khandakershahi">
    		Options Indexes FollowSymLinks ExecCGI Includes
    AllowOverride All
	Require all granted
        </Directory>

Thanks

Which error do you get? Eventually you have to change the path to httpd-php-fpm.conf when it’s in the same directory as httpd-vhosts.conf. You can check your Apache config with httpd -S for configuration errors.

1. followed this link and it work the noraml way.
2. and from this link did only this part

#### Using php-fpm and mod_proxy_fcgi

This method provides "an alternative PHP FastCGI implementation with some additional features (mostly) useful for heavy-loaded sites" [[1]](https://www.php.net/manual/en/install.fpm.php).

**Note:** Unlike the widespread setup with ProxyPass, the proxy configuration with SetHandler respects other Apache directives like DirectoryIndex. This ensures a better compatibility with software designed for libphp, mod_fastcgi and mod_fcgid. If you still want to try ProxyPass, experiment with a line like this:

ProxyPassMatch ^/(.*\.php(/.*)?)$ unix:/run/php-fpm/php-fpm.sock|fcgi://localhost/srv/http/$1

[Install](https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Install) [php-fpm](https://archlinux.org/packages/?name=php-fpm).

Enable proxy modules:

/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

LoadModule proxy_module modules/mod_proxy.so LoadModule proxy_fcgi_module modules/mod_proxy_fcgi.so

Create `/etc/httpd/conf/extra/php-fpm.conf` with the following content:

DirectoryIndex index.php index.html <FilesMatch \.php$> SetHandler "proxy:unix:/run/php-fpm/php-fpm.sock|fcgi://localhost/" </FilesMatch>

And include it at the bottom of `/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf`:

Include conf/extra/php-fpm.conf

**Note:** The pipe between `sock` and `fcgi` is not allowed to be surrounded by a space! `localhost` can be replaced by any string. More [here](https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/mod_proxy_fcgi.html)

You can configure PHP-FPM in `/etc/php/php-fpm.d/www.conf`, but the default setup should work fine.

Start and enable `php-fpm.service`. [Restart](https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Restart) `httpd.service`.

3. Than I follow your instruction.

here is my httpd.conf

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/access_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr/local/apache2/logs/access_log", whereas "/logs/access_log"
# will be interpreted as '/logs/access_log'.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to specify a local disk on the
# Mutex directive, if file-based mutexes are used. If you wish to share the
# same ServerRoot for multiple httpd daemons, you will need to change at
# least PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/etc/httpd"

#
# Mutex: Allows you to set the mutex mechanism and mutex file directory
# for individual mutexes, or change the global defaults
#
# Uncomment and change the directory if mutexes are file-based and the default
# mutex file directory is not on a local disk or is not appropriate for some
# other reason.
#
# Mutex default:/run/httpd

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

# Virtual Hosts
#
# Required modules: mod_log_config

# If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your
# machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Most configurations
# use only name-based virtual hosts so the server doesn't need to worry about
# IP addresses. This is indicated by the asterisks in the directives below.
#
# Please see the documentation at
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/vhosts/>
# for further details before you try to setup virtual hosts.
#
# You may use the command line option '-S' to verify your virtual host
# configuration.

#
# VirtualHost example:
# Almost any Apache directive may go into a VirtualHost container.
# The first VirtualHost section is used for all requests that do not
# match a ServerName or ServerAlias in any <VirtualHost> block.

Now I in my browser I see this and it is a wordpress site.

The tutorial mentioned starts PHP-FPM for PHP8, but you included my config for PHP7 in your vhost config for khandakershahi.local. So also check if both FPM services are running:

sudo systemctl status php-fpm.service
sudo systemctl status php-fpm7.service

In the last line of your http.conf it says:

Include conf/extra/php-fpm.con

Don’t know if the fat the end is just a typo, but include php-fpm.conf either globally in the httpd.conf (just a single PHP version) OR in each vhost the version you need.

I forgot to enable the php-fpm.service and php-fpm7.service now they are running.

the file name was wrong so I fixed it but I don’t want it load globally but from vhost.

In vhost I have to include httpd-php-fpm7.conf with ifmodule otherwise it throws error like 503 but what ever I add it show only php 8 not php 7.

I nclude conf/extra/httpd-php-fpm7.conf

or

Include conf/extra/php-fpm7.conf

ServerAdmin webmaster@khandakershahi.local
DocumentRoot /data/lampp/htdocs/khandakershahi
ServerName khandakershahi.local
# ErrorLog “logs/khandakershahi.local-error_log”
# CustomLog “logs/khandakershahi.local-access_log” common

	<Directory "/data/lampp/htdocs/khandakershahi">
	Options Indexes FollowSymLinks ExecCGI Includes
	AllowOverride All
	Require all granted
	</Directory>

<IfModule mod_fastcgi>
Include conf/extra/httpd-php-fpm7.conf
</IfModule>

In httpd.conf file

which one to keep and which one to comment out as I want both to working with multiple vhost.
Like vhost khandakershahi.local need to run in php7.

:thinking:

I have reinstall apache and did not activate any php version in httpd.conf. Only did the Using php-fpm and mod_proxy_fcgi part from the arch wiki than I found this tutorial and from that I am able to solve it.

Now my vhost file look like this

    ServerAdmin webmaster@khandakershahi.local
	DocumentRoot "/data/lampp/htdocs/khandakershahi"
	ServerName khandakershahi.local
#	ErrorLog "logs/khandakershahi.local-error_log"
#	CustomLog "logs/khandakershahi.local-access_log" common
	<FilesMatch "\.php$">
     SetHandler "proxy:unix:/run/php-fpm7/php-fpm.sock|fcgi://localhost:8072"
   </FilesMatch>
	<Directory "/data/lampp/htdocs/khandakershahi">
		DirectoryIndex index.php index.html
       Options Indexes MultiViews FollowSymLinks
       Require all granted
       AllowOverride All
	</Directory>
