Multi-Monitor on Plasma Wayland on Optimus Laptop

I have a 1050Ti Max-Q GPU on my laptop and I use the proprietary Nvidia driver(525.89.02-3 now but it wasn’t working as long as I remember (and I am on unstable branch)). Multi-monitor works in X11 but when I try Wayland, multi-monitor does not work.

To troubleshoot I tried other distros.

  • I installed Ubuntu with Gnome and it worked (so the problem is not hardware issue, but it could be Plasma)
  • Then I tried KDE Neon (unstable) and it also worked (so the issue is not the Plasma either)
  • Then I tried the new Manjaro ISO and it didn’t work (so the issue is not a change by me because a new installation is not working, so I thought it is probably Manjaro)
  • And finally I tried EndeavourOS, it also didn’t work (so the issue is not from Manjaro)

My suspicion now is there is a difference between Ubuntu’s (maybe Debian) and Arch’s Nvidia driver somehow because Ubuntu based distros work but Arch based ones don’t.

Plasma + Nvidia + Wayland are not there yet. You can see on Plasma/Wayland/Nvidia - KDE Community Wiki more about the Known Limitations.

As I mentioned KDE Neon worked. But I think I should also test the stable KDE Neon because (hopefully) 5.27 update could’ve fixed the problem

wayland won’t work with this. use X11 instead.

I couldn’t find KDE Neon’s non-5.27 iso so I tried Kubuntu with KDE 5.25.5 and Multi-Monitor on Wayland works. So the issue is not my hardware nor Plasma.

Now update it to 5.26.5 and see if the issue is back …

Kubuntu still doesn’t have that. I couldn’t try that but I made Wayland Multi-Monitor work on Manjaro another way.

Apparently when I tried to enable Nvidia DRM kernel mode setting by adding the kernel parameter and got black screen and then decided to use the Early loading method without the kernel parameter, I assumed it worked. But when I was searching for my Multi-Monitor issue I came across how to check if DRM was working or not. And realized I needed the kernel parameter, then it again resulted in black screen at boot. Checked some logs and realized sddm couldn’t find a display with the error Failed to read display number from pipe. Everybody was suggesting to look at xorg configs at /etc but I didn’t have any related to displays/screens, just keyboard and touchpad.

Then I remembered it is possible to make sddm run on Wayland by using sddm-git and some configs. I tried it and it works. The sddm experience is not great with flickering and stuff but I don’t care about it. The only real issue I have right now is my external monitor feels sluggish (my laptops screen feels snappier than before). I’m going back to X11 for now but at every Nvidia or sddm update I will check if anything is fixed and edit this post for other people.

But this still doesn’t explain why Ubuntu-based distros don’t have this problem.

Edit: Apparently my issue of external monitor feeling sluggish is known by the KDE
