Mt7921 temperature goes up to 124 C

I’m a little concerned about the temperature of the mt7921 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module on my ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-F mainboard.
When I use Wi-Fi at 10 MB/s, the sensor reading rises to 80–90 (one-time peak of 124 °C!!) degrees Celsius?! At idle, it’s around 50 °C, which seems normal to me.
The Wi-Fi works perfectly, even at this temperature.
According to the module’s specifications, the maximum allowable temperature range is up to 70 °C.

Is the reading incorrect, or is the cooling at that location on the motherboard that inadequate?

124 °C / 260° F is insanely hot and can and will damage electronics. 50° C / 122° F is a bit high at idle. Normal might be around 38° C / 100° F or lower.

Your fans are barely moving at less than 1000 RPM. That’s normal for some case fans, but your CPU & GPU fans should be spinning faster than that. Some fans listed are either not spinning at all or they’re not supported, might be the latter reason. Either way, sounds like you need better cooling in your case.

Second that. Everything seems a little too warm there so i guess it is the case cooling. And modern wireless can get hot while transmitting data.
Since it is a desktop, you can also think adding some heatsinks here and there direct on the chips if there is space. I would do it at least for the wireless and the memory.

What bothers me is that although the fans may be under-dimensioned for the task (that would be the next mod after heatsinks), the bios should have tried to compensate a little with speed. So check the settings/profile there and if there is even newer firmware. Or try to speed the things from the OS side with fan control or similar management software.

Yeah, the airflow in this case is a joke when you’re running a Ryzen 9 9900X3D and an RX 9070XT.
I really can’t recommend the BeQuiet Silent Base 601, especially not for gaming.
Out of the box, it came equipped with 2x140 fans in the front and 1x140 in the back, all with a max of 1000 RPM, manually adjustable in 3 steps. Absolutely ridiculous.
It didn’t take even two weeks before I swapped them out: 3 × 140 at the front and 1 × 140 at the back, PWM-controlled via the motherboard.

I’ve now switched the fan control in the BIOS from “Standard” to “Turbo” and removed the front bezel from the case, which has lowered most temperatures by 4 degrees, but the MT7921 is still hovering around 50. OK, a room temperature of 27 degrees isn’t helpful either.
I think I’ll try your recommendation and see if I can mount a heatsink on the module.

here the updated sensors…

Perhaps it’s time to look at a liquid-cooling solution.

Hmm…
In almost every review of liquid cooling I’ve read, there was a criticism somewhere that an average liquid cooler is usually louder than even a below-average air cooler.

And I think liquids and electrical devices are, in general, a bad combination.
And then there’s me, who tends to want to try things out right away and impatiently cobbles everything together in a hurry. Well, most accidents happen at home.

I’ve personally never used liquid cooling. However, I’ve seen it in use (once, a few years ago) and what stays foremost in my recollection is how cool the case and chassis were, considering it was a summer day.

As with most things, one gets what one pays for.

Criticism is a phenomenon we largely can’t avoid with arguably “edge” technologies (in the sense that few actually use expensive liquid cooling, in favour of fans). The best is probably to research those who have used it, and search for the criticisms among that demographic.

You mentioned a BeQuiet enclosure.

Interesting to note is that very few computer enclosures are provided with sufficient cooling; only in recent years have mainboards provided for powering more than one system and (at most) two chassis fans.

Cooling is typically an afterthought by most computer buyers/builders, but is nonetheless important to consider as additional required parts from the onset.

I’m personally using a BeQuiet Something case. The airflow design is not particularly remarkable, however typical of most enclosures in the marketplace.

Additional fans were needed, as a matter of course; so far I’ve not endured temperatures anywhere close to those mentioned.

Aside:- In the “old days” I might simply remove the side panels. Period. Then, there was only dust to contend with.
