Mt7601u usb wifi failure/issues

Hi,
there is this long time issue with a wifi usb adapter which seems quite common. When I plug that (with all the last kernel versions), I get the following error messages:

Any ideas about how to make the device working without issues?

Waiting for a reply,

Thanks.

Is the system fully updated? The driver should be included in the kernel.
Is linux-firmware installed?
Have you tried a different kernel?
Can you post a full inxi output?
output of sudo dmesg -w
lsusb output
What have you tried so far?
Does it work on the live .iso?
Check in BIOS settings?

The repeating error messages seems to indicate a broken hardware, could be either the dongle or the port (not capable of providing enough power, for instance). MT7601 is a common chipset used in wireless dongles and the kernel has its driver built-in, so it’s unlikely a software issue. But you can try it first in several other computers to find out, with the following scenario:

  1. Test in another computer with Manjaro
  2. If it works, probably a faulty USB port
  3. Otherwise, test in another computer with Windows, as usually it’s guaranteed to work there
  4. If it doesn’t work, certainly a faulty dongle
  5. If it works, now we can conclude it’s a software issue that needs further digging, although from my findings so far, all other threads end with the reporter either use another dongle / card or buying a new dongle, admitting the reported one is indeed faulty

As I said before, I get these error messages with all the last kernel versions; system updated, linux-firmware installed; you can find a full inxi output in this post: forum manjaro → a-few-serious-issues-after-manjaro-installation/121161?u=cristian_c topic post url
As noting at the linked post, dmesg output is spammed by memory corruption messages; Here is (a complete) lsusb output:

lsusb

Result doesn’t change if OS is running live or it’s installed. What do you mean when you talk about BIOS settings, exactly? What should I check?

I don’t understand: this wifi adapter works with Windows 10 on this same machine but it doesn’t work on other machines with manjaro. Does it mean it’s a faulty/broken adapter? It seems not, looking at these results. If it’s a software issue, how can I make this mwifi adapter working? Waiting for a reply, thanks.

Hi @cristian_c,

If I have things correct, then it is this device:

And as can be seen on said page, it has many more Failed reports than than Working or even just Detected. But luckily it seems there are alternative drivers that can be tried. Unfortunately, we don’t really know which driver it’s currently trying to use that’s faulty, which we need to know about so that we can block it.

So let’s try find that out. Please provide the output of:

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

@Mirdarthos , the command freezes for a few seconds. Btw:

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

I see this device doesn’t even seem to have a driver, which would explain it.

One mentioned on that page previously is in the AUR:

$ pamac search Mt7601u
[...]
mt7601u-dkms-git latest-1 AUR
mt7601u DKMS driver

So you should be able to install it with:

pamac build mt7601u-dkms-git

Since there doesn’t seem to be another driver, it’s not necessary to unload one.

Hope this helps!

No, @Mirdarthos , if you look at the output in my last post, you can see at the end:

    |__ Port 2: Dev 0, If 0, Class=Vendor Specific Class, Driver=mt7601u, M

Btw, you’ve talked about alternative drivers that can be tried. Which driver are you talking about? Waiting for a reply, thanks.

There it shows that no driver is loaded.

I do not know how to interpret the output of lsusb -t, if the driver is actually in use, or if that’s one that would work.

Either way, it doesn’t work now, and it doesn’t seem to get loaded.

I gave you all the answers in my previous replies:

Please don’t make demands on anyone that tries to help’s time, here. We’re all volunteers from all over the world giving our own time and sharing knowledge. Hints demanding response, so time like that is not helpful.

You can easily check out if driver is loaded, we have the name it seems (mt7601u)

lsmod | grep mt7601u # it should be listed out
# or also just in case
lsmod | grep -i Ralink # or just lsmod and check all out manually

Then use # modprobe to remove / load the module (and see how it goes)

sudo modprobe -r mt7601u
sudo modprobe mt7601u

@Mirdarthos , I don’t understand. If your answer is mt7601u, this is the driver actually selected/used by the kernel, as clearly shown by the output in the first post:

[ 107.736197] mt7601u 1-2:1.0: ASIC revision: 76010001 MAC revision: 76010500

and lsusb -t shows the driver loaded by the kernel. Which other driver what you was talking about?

@dragan ,

lsmod | grep mt7601u
mt7601u 155648 0
mac80211 1323008 1 mt7601u
cfg80211 1138688 2 mt7601u,mac80211

The command:

lsmod | grep -i Ralink

returns nothing.

Then use # modprobe to remove / load the module (and see how it goes)

Done. What should I do next? Waiting for a reply, thanks.

Did anything change once you reloaded the module (via modprobe), has wifi status changed in any way (working or otherwise), run inxi and all again to see.

Also (if things don’t work) run
journalctl -r # (or maybe `journalctl --dmesg -r`)
…and see if any messages there during the moudule loading (e.g. you can open that in one terminal, in another try to reload module again, see if it’s failing with some particular error).

lsmod output means driver module was there. But reloading might have helped.

This is for diagnostics mostly, if reloading module doesn’t help then try the other driver as @Mirdarthos suggested.

Windows can sometimes leave some of the devices (WiFi-s typically) in some funny state, sorry I can’t remember much more, happened to me once many yrs ago. Meaning try shuttind down the Win fully then going into Manjaro. Long shot, or read about it for more.

I can’t add much more to this I’m afraid.

@dragan , I didn’t notice better results reloading the module. The wifi adapter keeps going appearing and disappearing continuously, as shown by sudo dmesg -w command output.

Running journalctl --dmesg -r command gives the same results as explained above. Btw, the command output:

I’ve asked which other driver he talked about (apart mt7601u, that I’m using) but he never answered.

Actually, I always boot manjaro, anyway I shut windows 10 down, so it doesn’t solve the issue.

Any other ideas? Waiting for a reply, thanks.

I did explain.

I don’t understand what you mean. The thread doesn’t show replies after that:

Edit: @Mirdarthos , do you display a following up reply which I’m not able to view in the thread?

This:

@Mirdarthos , I don’t understand what you mean. Your url shows the same messages I’m able to view in the thread. Why did you post that?

Because you said:

So I linked a screenshot showing my replies, including the ones with my suggestions that I understood you didn’t get, and highlighted my replies.

But in any case. This, I realize is the case:

…but it might have been updated or something in that line, in the driver I specified. In any case, according to this:

It seems it is quite the problematic device…

@Mirdarthos , When I wrote:

Edit: @Mirdarthos , do you display a following up reply which I’m not able to view in the thread?

you replied posting that url but I can display the same thread messages after Mt7601u usb wifi failure/issues - #16 by cristian_c included in your url. So there seem not to be messages I’m not able to view in the thread. It doesn’t make sense.

Looking at Ralink Technology MT7601U Wireless Adapter , the other driver mentioned there (apart mt7601u which I’m already using) is named as W311MI but that url points to an error page url.
