when plugging my SanDisk clip mp3 player into my manjaro KDE pc it does not appear in file manager, its also does not show any actions when viewing by journalctl -xf in terminal. Plugging in a flash drive both shows up in file manager and you can see actions in the term. I have tried other distros (ubuntu 18.10, LXLE 16.04, Elementry OS, Manjaro 18-04) just to ensure it wasn’t a fault with my current KDE image. I have also tried other mp3 including different brands but none connect. This never used to happen so what has changed.
When did that change? Do you remember what happened then (update, configuration change, player dropped…)?
Hard to say as i can update my system many times between connecting my mp3 but lets say three months.
Dumb question: does the player still work?
Yep, as I said I’ve tried a few different mp3 players all with same result
it’s very, very strange and unusual
that just literally nothing appears in the system logs
when you plug in a (working) usb device
(like: your player)
You mentioned three different players
… none of them showed up?
No not one of them
OK, let’s see if the kernel reacts to it at all:
-
With the MP3 player unplugged, open a terminal.
-
Run the following:
sudo dmesg -w
Don’t worry, it will output a lot of stuff. This is normal.
-
When it has finished outputting the many lines of stuff press Enter ±5 times in the terminal, to clear space after the last message from the command.
-
While keeping the terminal open, plug in the MP3 player. If all goes according to plan, the terminal should output at least some lines of text.
-
Select and copy those lines. We need 'em here.
-
Reply here and provide the copied lines. But don’t just paste them. Instead, paste it between three backticks (```). Like this:
```
pasted text
```
This will cause the output to be like this:
Id maecenas
cursus nisl leo
aliquam
nisi aliquam sit molestie
quisque quis scelerisque
adipiscing scelerisque
elit bibendum sollicitudin varius
bibendum accumsan nisl maximus eget tortor.
Instead of like this:
Id maecenas cursus nisl leo aliquam nisi aliquam sit molestie quisque quis scelerisque adipiscing scelerisque elit bibendum sollicitudin varius bibendum accumsan nisl maximus eget tortor.
improving legibility and efforts to be of assistance.
did exactly as you stated no output. when plugging in the switched off mp3 it powered on and waited for me to press play so theres power from the PC
Hmmm…
Have you, perhaps, tried it somewhere else? On another Manjaro? Any other distro? Windoze?
Have you tried another kernel?
Just sitting here thinking that I loaded up my phone(android) the other day so should be working, plugged this in and i t too was not working!! So I decided to revert back to my very short cable that I had been using (I had changed to a longer one for ease of use) hey presto its working, obviously a faulty cable but still managed to provide power, which was confusing matters. Lesson learnt check the obvious and simple things first. Problem solved many thanks to those who helped.
