Mounting Network Shares

Can anyone explain why this is happening?
(I’m running Manjaro in a VirtualBox)

[mike-vbox home]# ls
miken
[mike-vbox home]# cd miken
bash: cd: /miken: No such file or directory

the folder miken is there when I “list files” but when I try and change to it I get an error.

Ideas?

Thank you!..

Hi and welcome to the forum :+1:

Check output of pwd; ls -la; groups please.

[miken@mike-vbox ~]$ pwd; ls -la; groups

Means you are already inside “miken” that is why you can’t change into another “miken” directory inside it, there is no /home/miken/miken  :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I guess this is where I’m confused. The prompt shows that I’m in…

[mike-vbox home]#

If what you’re saying is correct (and I’m not questioning what you’re saying is true, I’m just trying to understand), wouldn’t my prompt be…

[mike-vbox miken]#

Thank you

[mike-vbox home]#

Can you repeat that command sequence when you are at the [mike-vbox home]# prompt instead of the [miken@mike-vbox ~]$ prompt?
Providing output of another environment is poluting the info asked for in this case…

[miken@mike-vbox ~]$ pwd; ls -la; groups

:sleepy:

Thank you for the help on this. Although I don’t clearly understand WHY it was happening, I now know how to get around it so that I know where I’m at. Again, I truly appreciate the help and feedback.

For now, my questions has been resolved and this topic can be closed.

It seems to me, that you changed between root and your user account.

[miken@mike-vbox ~]$ ← that is a user
[mike-vbox home]# ← that is root

The difference is that root has a different .bashrc config file as the user. And therefore a different PROMPT.

Hope that makes it more clear.

You have no folder named miken in your home - don’t confuse /home/miken with /home/miken/miken.

While it is possible to mount a device onto a folder with content - it will be confusing to the system and to yourself.

A good rule of thumb - permanent mounts goes into a separate structure designed for mounting - e.g.

  • /data/device
  • /data/smb/sharename

The first guide cover the essentials and the second shows sample units to use as base for your own use case.
