Mobile GTX 1070: HDMI monitor not detected with 580xx drivers

EDIT: I run into this problem with a mobile GTX 1070 and an external MSI monitor (hdmi): The monitor is detected without issues under the 570 drivers but not detected with the 580s.

I have found this arch thread that might point to a solution:

When I install the 580 drivers with sudo mhwd -i pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-580xx-prime it shows missing dkms modules during the install process:

ERROR: module not found: 'nvidia' ==> ERROR: module not found: 'nvidia_drm' ==> ERROR: module not found: 'nvidia_uvm' ==> ERROR: module not found: 'nvidia_modeset'

Any possibility to fix this with bringing dkms-driver version to the manjaro repo? I use KDE Plasma and Wayland.

As far as I’m aware, the Nvidia 580xx drivers should support your GTX 1070 (Nvidia dropped that support with the 590xx series).

With any luck, someone may have a suggestion or two.

That might be for the best, all things considered.

Without meaning to create any false hope; especially as I have no idea if this would be a working option for your system; but, have you tried the 575xx driver series?

I seem to recall it being suggested for laptop configurations around the same time that the Nvidia driver issues were generally topical.

Same issue with 575 drivers.

So I had set some hope in 580, especially because Manjaro officially dropped 570 and 575 from the repos.

While I have no concrete suggestion to workaround the issue, I have consolidated the following information in case it may be useful for others wishing to help:

I have not found 570xx drivers available via the AUR, at this time. Perhaps @philm or @Yochanan might shed some light on this.

Well, I am on kernel version 6.18 and my only issue is the detection of the attached monitor.
The laptop’s internal screen works flawless with 575 and 580 drivers, but the laptop stands on the side of my desk and the attached HDMI screen is usually the only monitor I use. The laptop screen is disabled after booting.

Notice there were some HDMI related issues in 580, cf. NVIDIA Releases Linux Driver 580.105 With HDMI and Game Crash Fixes

Now 580.173.02 is the latest version and should be fixed. However, you’re using an older kernel, so I’m not sure whether the fixes would work in that case. I would try out kernel 7.1 together with linux71-nvidia-580xx.

I updated the kernel to 7.1 and afterwards HDMI detection did not work either. So I just updated the whole system, because I was so annoyed by the situation and then installed the nvidia 580 drivers. Same issue.

Afterwards I re-googled the problem and tried modifying GRUB by adding nvidia-drm.modeset=1 and updating GRUB afterwards.
Before anyone complains now, that this should be a default GRUB entry for a hybrid system => in the past it never worked for me and lead to blackscreens during the boot process.

After updating GRUB and rebooting this time it seems to have fixed my problem. HDMI screen is now detected and my setup is working again.

That’s been set by default since the 560xx series and was patched to set it for quite some time before that, by the way:

To verify that DRM is actually enabled, execute the following:

# cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset

Which should now return Y, and not N.

That’s probably what actually resolved the issue. :wink:

Well, I am not convinced by that, because I did updating and rebooting - more than once - before and the monitor was not detected then. That is what led to the whole hassle and this thread.
As far as I can tell, the GRUB edit did the trick. Maybe some of my config-files were screwed up before…

This (nvidia-drm.modeset=1) worked for me as well.

  • Up-to-date desktop system with 6.18 kernel
  • GTX 1060 (Pascal)
  • Dell Monitor / Display Port

After updating to driver 580.173.02 the system did boot (into Gnome DM), but only with a low resolution. The Dell display was not recognized and no other resolution could be selected in Manjaro Display Settings. Also, when turning the display ‘off’ and ‘on’, it would not return with any output and fall into display powersave mode.

I did the following:
Modify
/etc/default/grub:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=“nvidia-drm.modeset=1”
Run
$ sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
…and reboot.

$ sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset now returns ‘Y’ instead of ‘N’.
