Microphone won't be recognized

Hi! I’m experiencing the issue of Manjaro not recognizing my microphones (either built in or external) for almost a year now. I know this is a common issue but after reading almost every post on the topic, I’m still not capable of solving my problem.

I was in the mid of a call and all of sudden my microphone went mute. Turns out it doesn’t appear in the settings anymore. It’s also missing from PulseAudio and Alsamixer.

I’ve already tried the solutions listed here without success: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PulseAudio/Troubleshooting#Microphone

Some useful info:

I’m new to Linux and quite clueless. What should I do?

Hi & welcome to Linux & Manjaro. It sounds like a frustrating issue. It might be a dumb suggestion but have you tried a different kernel? I always have several kernels installed as a rule & on the odd occasion, a different kernel has solved an issue. It’s a long shot but you haven’t had a response yet, so I thought I’d throw my 10 cents in. All the best with this & more power to you meantime. Ruziel

Hi, Ruziel! Thank you for the welcome and the help! Yeah, it’s been quite a frustrating issue once it’s impairing my ability to work on the laptop. I need to grab my phone every time there’s a meeting…

Changing kernels sounds like a reasonable idea. Unfortunately, it didn’t work :slightly_frowning_face: That was one of the first things I tried to do when the issue happened, but I wasn’t very hopeful because, usually, kernel issues tend to happen to me after an upgrade. And the issue happened during a meeting!

I even considered it could be a hardware related problem, but it doesn’t really make sense since external microphones (I tested the one in my bluetooth earphones) are also unrecognized.

Anyways, thank you.

I hope you find a solution to your issue soon. Worse case scenario, would you consider reinstalling? I guess you’ve maybe tried reinstalling Pulse & ALSA. As you know, audio can be a pain in the rear with Linux & I’ve had a couple of challenges myself over the years.

Also, I think I saw somewhere that you use KDE - if so, maybe it’s an issue there but now I’m just guessing wildly.

When did you first install Manjaro & how long was it working fine before you started experiencing this audio issue?

Go well meantime.

Yeah, I do consider reinstalling, it’s just that I can’t do it right now because I’m using this laptop the whole time due to work, and I have no time to set up my graphic card driver and all those boring things.

I didn’t try to reinstall Pulse and ALSA, though! I could give that a try! I think the main reason I didn’t try it before is that, as I’m still not that used to Linux, I’m afraid to break things even further. Is there a “correct” or “safe” way to do it?

I’m indeed considering asking about this in the KDE section of the forum as well.

I think Manjaro worked without those issues for almost a year after the installation.

Thank you again.

Good news! I can’t even believe it, but I solved. Turns out I had both PulseAudio and Pipewire running at the same time. I uninstalled the PulseAudio and now it works.

Found the solution here: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/microphone-is-gone-from-my-system-worked-well-for-years/107578/2?u=orfeu012
