Hello, I consider myself a beginner in Linux, although I’ve used it in the past on another laptop, but that’s not really relevant. The point is that I’m currently using another, somewhat older device (in my view).
I was on Windows 10, but due to recent events and because I want to learn and improve my skills with operating systems, I returned after a few years to Manjaro KDE Plasma.
The problem is that everything works except my microphone. I got tired of searching for something that would solve the issue in a way I could understand. I don’t want to take a drastic step like going back to Windows 10. Besides that, I genuinely like the platform and want to use it to better understand the Linux experience.
Sorry if the text also sounds confusing, I ask for a bit of patience with me. I’m a bit afraid of being criticized because of my lack of knowledge. If possible, could you help me and guide me in learning and understanding this Linux distribution?
Please forgive me for any mistakes in my English, as I am not a native speaker.
Regarding your microphone issue, some detailed system information would be helpful. Please read through the following pre-prepared instructions:
As a new or infrequent forum user, you are encouraged to take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements; in particular, the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:
The Update Announcements contain a Known Issues and Solutions section and should generally be checked before posting a request for support.
Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:
Running `inxi` in `chroot`
Providing `inxi` when you cannot access your desktop environment
Regards.
Note that any code or command output (such as inxi output) should be placed within a scrollable pre-formatted text enclosure according to forum guidelines.
See here for instructions:
[MiniHowTo] Present code or command output
Note: Grave accent (or, backtick) characters are used.
For inlinecode or to show a single command:
for example, typing: `code here` will display the text as code here.
For multi-linecommand output:
place text beween two rows of three (```) backtick characters to form a scrollable text box, or …
use the </> button in the Compose window to achieve the same result.
The empty row between these rows of backtick characters is where to paste any multi-line command output (such as inxi).
An example of a pre-formatted text enclosure:
What is a Quark?
A. In Physics, an elementary particle and fundamental constituent of matter.
B. A character from the Star Trek: "Deep Space Nine" television series.
C. A soft, creamy, usually unsalted cheese traditional to central Europe.
You should be fine as long as you follow instructions provided by the helpers here, and provide information such as command output or logs if requested. After all, we were all newbies once-upon-a-time.
Although the volunteers are always happy to help, it should also be noted that the Forum Rules - Manjaro specifically include the section Life is a Two-way Street, which includes the following sentences:
That means browsing the forum and using the search feature to see if an issue identical or similar to yours already has a solution. Also, the following 2 wikis are very useful:
Anyway, make sure you provide the inxi -zv8 output and hopefully one of the forum’s audio experts will be able to help you.
Hello, thank you for informing me about this factor—I found it interesting. Anyway, I used the alsamixer command and selected my microphone (which I didn’t expect to be recognized by the system). I noticed that Mic Boost and Capture were at maximum, with only Internal Mic Boost set to 00. I tested whether changing it would help and set it to 100, but the problem still persists. I suspect that the system is probably using the internal microphone.
In any case, thank you for guiding me.
By the way, I installed Hardinfo 2 to check the input devices, and my external microphone was listed as “HDA Intel PCH Mic.” I’m not sure if this helps much—it was probably already mentioned in that list of important information about my machine (I say that because I saw something similar, or maybe I’m just overthinking it).
Thank you for your patience, and sorry for being a bit clumsy and for the somewhat confusing text—my English isn’t very good.
