Media keys (Volume, play/pause) sporadically not working as well as sound tray icon being unresponsive

My media keys will stop working at random, with no connection to whether the system is being stressed or any programs being open. Restarting pulseaudio via systemctl --user restart pulseaudio does nothing meaningful. Sometimes, pausing and unpausing spotify a few times results in every media key action I did since it stopped working all being executed at once.
I checked .xsession_errors and I see

As far as troubleshooting goes, I’ve reinstalled pulseaudio, manjaro-pulse, moved client.conf, daemon.conf, and system.pa in /etc/pulse/ but there’s no change in behavior.

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…

  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)

:+1:

P.S. If you enter a bit more details in your profile, we can also see which Desktop Environment you’re using, which CPU/GPU or Kernel, … you have without typing it every time

Thanks, I was thinking that the information I provided was pretty vague, I should’ve looked for that first.
When I run sudo dmesg -l emerg, alert, crit, err, warn nothing stands out aside from

[ 4.859111] usb 3-1: Warning! Unlikely big volume range (=17152), cval->res is probably wrong.
[ 4.859116] usb 3-1: [2] FU [PCM Playback Volume] ch = 2, val = 0/17152/1

and when I run sudo dmesg | grep usb the lines that have usb 3-1 in them are

Has it always been like that?

  • Because if it started recently, you’re on 5.11, an experimental kernel and 5.10 and 5.4 are LTS versions (Long Time Support) so you should try those out first)
  • If always, keep trying newer kernels if that’s really new hardware you have there.

This problem started on Thursday of last week, which is some time after I installed and booted 5.11 and when I restarted to 5.10 today the problem persisted.
I think my system is tearing itself apart so I might just reinstall Manjaro completely while backing up my home folder.

This may be due to the PulseAudio panel plugin

Can you change the volume using pavucontrol? Or does it also freeze?

Thanks for the idea! I ran pavucontrol from the terminal and whisker menu which worked as it should but the panel plugin is unresponsive and when checking .xsession_errors again, I see

I went ahead and backed up my home folder and package list and reinstalled Manjaro. I’ll mark this as the solution because I don’t want people thinking this is still a problem.
