Are we getting access to the collated data that’s shared with the partners? How can we verify that it doesn’t contain data that allows fingerprinting? The open source community isn’t built on trust, it’s built on transparency. People can check the source code and build-scripts if they want. They don’t really have to trust anything. The trust they have (if they have it) is a consequence of transparency.

Before sending the data, you can dry-run the tool to see what would be sent: mdd --dry-run. If you’re fine with the data being transmitted then just run MDD again, this time without any arguments to submit the data: mdd

Testers needed: Manjaro Data Donor

I worked the last few days on a new Manjaro project: Manjaro Data Donor - short MDD. It is a way for us to gather a few usage statistics about Manjaro. The motivation for that at the start was to improve our user counting. Until now what has been done, was counting systems via ping.manjaro.org. How is this different from Amazon, Mozilla, Apple, Google, Microsoft routinely asking people to agree to share their usage and analytics data “to help improve their products”?

In one extremely important way:

For Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, etc. you have to pay. For Manjaro, you don’t. Manjaro has been transparent about everything, others? Not so much.
