Maximising window on monitor causes it to disconnect

This issue seems to not occur all the time, but is annoying nonetheless. I connect my Tuxedo Sirius 16 Gen 1 from its HDMI port to one of my two monitors via HDMI. It displays just fine, but if I maximise any window: nautilus, firefox, spotify etc then my monitor randomly disconnects. The system attempts to reconnect my monitor and when it does succeed the monitor then disconnects again, thus causing an endless cycle with no stability. Only when I move the full screen window or unmaximise it does the issue go away. The second monitor is connected via DisplayPort and does not exhibit any such issue. I am using GNOME (latest on stable) as my DE. Here’s my system info:

Are we aware of any issues relating to HDMI → HDMI on AMD GPUs?

Can you try a LTS kernel like 6.6 or 6.1 ?

Tuxedo Computers uses a custom firmware - I suggest you check your downloads page for an updated firmware as I think the firmware was updated late February 2024.

At least it was for the Tuxedo Pulse - which is the same APU - although it does not have the radeon GPU.

Maximizing a window is usually not causing instability - but it is difficult to have an opinion on.

From what I gather from the inxi output the hdmi out is the Radeon while the dp is the APU.

Have you tried switching them - not necessarily possible - but one has to ask - right?

Can you try to use only one monitor ?

#1 Try a different HDMI cable.

I’ve switched HDMI for DisplayPort on my monitor and so far I’ve not had any issues. Now I have both monitors connected via DisplayPort. The HDMI port is thus vacant on the said machine. With regards to the firmware @linux-aarhus can you point me where the firmware for my system would be in?

@Keruskerfuerst Downgrading to 6.6 isn’t really an option for me for various reasons relating to the APU.

Log into Tuxedo account → click the hamburger in upper right corner → select downloads → compare the version from your system with the version available.

If attaching both monitors to dp solves the issue there is technically no need for a firmware update.

I would recheck the inxi output to verify if the monitor in question is still attached to the GPU or has moved to the APU.

Why this solves it - one is left to speculate - it may be a hardware error related to the hdmi port or it may be related to the hdmi cable used - cables are not created equal - meaning that the bandwidth available in any given cable may not be enough for given situation.

@linux-aarhus I’m still not sure about this - no version found. I use fwupdmgr to update firmware and drivers and I can’t see any new updates available.

At the moment the issue hasn’t manifested, even on HDMI. It seems to occur particularly after I switch the input source on my monitor.

As of writing, this issue still occurs. I had to go back to using HDMI instead of DP on my main monitor as the system wasn’t consistently picking up signal from my monitor. At any rate, I used a different HDMI cable. Unfortunately I still get the same issue. From the logs that I have seen on systemd, I get this:

That Invalid argument error was spammed over and over. I believe my issue also seems to be related to this: Failed to post KMS update: drmModeAtomicCommit: Invalid argument in journal after playing video with MPV (#2749) · Issues · GNOME / mutter · GitLab
