Many Apps broken since Dec Update

Ever since the late Dec update several apps are broken. I’m not seeing any big clues in the journal, but maybe I’m not looking right.

Broken apps: BitWarden, Spotify, Insomnia, VS Code, Brave.

It almost seems like an issue with electron? Here’s some logs from VS Code attempting to start:

Most (if not all) of those appear to be AUR packages. If so, you probably need to rebuild them.

Well, insomnia is not a repository package; it’s from the AUR. So perhaps it should be rebuilt against the current state of the system. :backhand_index_pointing_down:

pamac build insomnia

As for the others you list, I personally don’t use either of them, so I couldn’t say if there were any problems with them, but considering that you mention December as the starting point of the difficulties, I think we would have heard more of that by now if the problem was really with the applications themselves, as opposed to something local and specific to your machine.

That said, you are also using a rather old kernel. It’s an LTS kernel and it’s still supported until the end of the year, but I would recommend switching to either 6.12 or 6.18, both of which are also LTS kernels.

Spotify works on my end. I currently do not even have electron installed.

Updated to 6.12, rebuilt insomnia and spotify, no luck. They sort of start, appear in the task bar, then just crash.

Maybe a better error though:

BitWarden appears to have an official image now, I installed that and have at least one thing working again.

can you supply the full command that lead to this output/result?
you probably can

Looks like something GPU related. An inxi -zv8 would not hurt too. Maybe try another nvidia driver?

That’s the rabbit hole I’m in currenty. Changing the driver isn’t as simple as I had hoped.

Update: downgraded to video-nvidia-575xx, no difference.

Please supply output from

inxi -zv8

as requested by @Teo

Phew, that returns a lot of info! Here’s what seems like it would be relevant, but let me know if the rest (flags, audio, repos, etc) would be helpful. I’m also on kernel 6.18 now.

Spotify, VSCode, and Insomnia all run into the same error:

zsh: trace trap (core dumped) insomnia --no-sandbox

There’s also insomnia-bin if you prefer to save a few minutes build.

Bitwarden is in the official repositories - no hiccups for me (on testing), but a few ghosts in pamac, showing some AUR entries, so check it out and maybe remove it and install from the Official Repositories (extra). I’m not sure what you meant by ‘Bitwarden appears to have an official image’…

Those GPU errors are interesting - I have a Ryzen APU.

When system information is requested, and a specific command given, the full output of the command is generally expected.

Please edit your post and replace the existing content with the full inxi output:

inxi -zv8

There was a stable branch snap around February 1.

Please read the linked topic - ensure you are fully updated.

As you are using Linux 6.6 - I suggest you move on to Linux 6.18.

Trying to deduce possible causes

  • BitWarden is inherited from upstream Arch Linux
  • Spotify is a custom recipe (AUR)
  • Insomnia is a custom recipe (AUR)
  • VS Code - is a custom recipe (code-oss AUR)
  • Electron39 is the latest stable - inherited from upstream Arch Linux
  • Brave - may be from repo (brave-browser) or a custom recipe (brave AUR)

At least rebuild the following to match the current system state

  1. code-oss
  2. Spotify
  3. Insomnia

I’ve tried a couple different versions of VS Code now (code OSS, visual-studio-code-bin) and same for insomnia. Also tried building a couple (don’t want to try Brave again though, it takes forever to build). They all get the same GPU error.

I got sidetracked by work and haven’t been able to troubleshoot for a couple of days. At least the Citrix client somehow still works.

1. Full system information requested:

The system information (inxi output) that you have previously given is incomplete – please provide the complete output.

This has already been requested several times by staff.

[MiniHowTo] Provide System Information

Basic details might give enough information for someone wishing to buy your computer, however, for Support purposes it’s best to ask your system directly.

Output of the inxi command will generate more useful and detailed information for those wishing to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)

Command output should be presented as pre-formatted text in accordance with forum guidelines. :eyes:

Running inxi within a chroot environment

  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

Your privacy is respected

2. Create a new User account for testing:

To help rule out the possibility that the issues described are limited to your current User account, please create a new account for testing purposes.

Once this account is created, login to the new User account, and test each application that you described that would:

This is an important step in troubleshooting these issues – please do not ignore it – if all/most of these applications launch as expected in the fresh environment, this will indicate that the root problem is limited to your usual account.

This knowledge will be invaluable for those wishing to help.

3. Informational:

There is a version of Visual Studio Code available in the official Manjaro extra repository – code:

In order to use this version, firstly, remove other variants you have been randomly installing; for example:

sudo pacman -Rns visual-studio-code-bin code-oss

Then install the generally recommended “repo” version:

sudo pacman -S code

4. Forever is a long time:

As was mentioned, there is a binary insomnia-bin available via the AUR – likewise, there are both varieties of Brave:

  • brave (AUR) – must be built from source
  • brave-bin (AUR) – the binary pre-built package

Many/most software from the AUR may be available either to build from source or as a pre-built binary package.

The binary package can often save you a lot of time (and potentially complication) when using software via the AUR.

I find the easiest way to verify that a binary package is available is to use your preferred Internet search engine;

with search terms something like this: aur thing-bin thing – the results you seek will generally be revealed without scrolling too far.

Then install the binary package using pamac-cli:

pamac build thing-bin

There is no best method to troubleshoot when the claim is - Many Apps broken since Dec Update.

I suggest you clean up your system as described in the linked topic [INFO] Stable branch - BIG update BEST practice

When you have made an effort to ensure your system is free of custom applications and orphans, proceed to make sure your system is fully up-to-date.

Then add one application at a time - test it thoroughly - look into the specific options to configure chromium based applications for use with the wayland display protocol.

Brave is based on Chromium and the other apps mentioned is based on Electron (based on Chromium). Brave browser is included in the Manjaro official repo - so you don’t need to build it from AUR.

Electron is based around Chromium’s V8 javascript engine and as such any application based on Electron is a webbrowser application.

You may need to edit/create configuration files to adapt the application to run correct only your system.

Example - there is likely other options - this was from a quick websearch

--enable-features=UseOzonePlatform --ozone-platform=wayland

Lastly - I have been using Plasam Wayland Session the longest time and I have never had to add or alter runtime flags for any Chromium based applications, that be browser or browser-based (Electron) applications.
