Manjaro rebooting after a period of time, specifically after locking it

I’m having a nearly daily recurring issue after locking my PC for the night, or for long periods of time. It is either in a hung state (no video output, no keyboard backlight, etc etc), or at the post-boot sign-in prompt. In order to recover from the former situation, I hard reset the PC. I’m writing this post after the latter had just occurred. At this time, I’m unsure if one or the other happens the most.

In regards to today, I tried looking at journalctl to see if anything stuck out at me. The only thing that occurred before journalctl stopped logging was timeshift was running and appears to have completed successfully at around 4 am, as well as some things about Obsidian. Then, nothing until I hard reset my machine at around 12:46 PM. I’ve included these logs as attachments to the topic. It’s hard for me to pinpoint when exactly the system rebooted, or if it crashed, or something else.

Lastly, this has been going on throughout the time I’ve had Manjaro installed for better part of a year now. After updating Manjaro recently, it seemed the issue disappeared, but it has now returned to its normal frequency.

Let me know if I need to provide any more logs. Any tips on looking in the right place would be helpful.

Thank you for your time.

Welcome to the Manjaro community @sirbuster

The first thing I usually recommend nowadays to members experiencing issues with Plasma on X11 is that they try switching to a Plasma Wayland session (which is now the default for Plasma). Most issues which came about with KDE’s change from X11 to Wayland last year (mainly associated with Nvidia) have now been resolved.

You can change your Plasma session from X11 to Wayland by selecting the session type at the login screen (Wayland is the default for Plasma).

If you have set up autologin to skip the password screen, you can change to a Wayland session by opening System Settings → Colors & Themes → Login Screen (SDDM) → Behavior.

If this could be the cause of what I’m experiencing, I’ll give it a shot. I rebooted and selected Wayland (switching to it without a reboot resulted in a black screen after signing in).

I’ll run with this for now - hopefully its that easy. Thank you.

When using the proprietary driver - it will probably be better to use Plasma X11 session.

If you want to use Wayland switch the driver to be the open source driver.

You can run nvidia-recommended-driver to verify what nvidia recommends.

As for your recurring issues - my bet is on the nvidia proprietary driver. It is a known that the combination of using Nvidia with hibernation or sleep can cause issues on wake-up.

The simplest method is to shutdown the system instead of locking it. Savings on the hardware life and on the power bill.

I double checked my power settings to make sure there was no hibernation or sleep going active after locking the PC:

I’ll see about switching to the open source driver. So far, after switching to Wayland while on the proprietary driver, I did not get a reboot/hang last night. I’ll need to keep an eye on it, though. I appreciate the suggestion.

For the sake of the issue: if I wanted to catch this issue in the act again, are there any changes I need to make to the available log sources (such as logging level for systemd, persistent dmesg logs after reboot, etc?) to capture something? Is there a log that I haven’t looked at yet, perhaps?

And basically right after I posted my last reply, my PC completely froze, then rebooted again without me locking it.

I’ve been trying to uninstall the nvidia drivers following this guide, but I am running into a dependency issue with the existing nvidia packages:

sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia                                                                                                                                                                                                      ✔

Something tells me that going down the dependency list here isn’t the right move. What would be the correct action to take here?

I don’t have a system with Nvidia but to manually change drivers you would

  • either use the kernel specific package
  • or use the generic dkms package

In any case you need to know your running kernel - better the installed kernels

 $ mhwd-kernel -li
Currently running: 6.15.3-1-MANJARO (linux615)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux612
   * linux615

The following is examples drawn from the example kernel listing above

kernel specific package

sudo pacman -Syu linux615-nvidia-open linux612-nvidia-open

using generic package

sudo pacman -Syu linux615-headers linux612-headers nvidia-open-dkms
