Manjaro randomly black screening second display

I have been using Manjaro off and on for a few years now but just last month decided to dual boot with a third HDD and use Manjaro more than Windows for awhile. I have everything I need to play games and drivers are installed for my system but at random times my second display blacks out then comes back, I see it black out but the monitor still has power when this happens. First display uses DisplayPort and never gets affected, second display using HDMI, was DVI-D to HDMI but cables are not at fault at this time as the DVI-D to HDMI cable did the same.

Right, but you show it anyway

You do have the Nvidia drivers installed and seem to be fine

But this shows that is not used or something is off.

Please share /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf
And since you are on XFCE, see if by deleting the displays.xml and rebooting the system will help.

rm ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml

Since you do not use the iGPU, why not disable it from BIOS and also remove the video-linux ?

Next part is unrelated to your issue, but you might want to use only one sound server, as for now both are running.

  1. I didn’t realize it was there a second time but fixed now, sorry about that, I looked for anymore before posting.
  2. here is /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf

  1. I did it so I’ll test to see if it fixes it
  2. I know not needed but replaced pulseaudio with Pipewire and easyeffects with lsp-plugins now.

I have video-linux not installed for the iGPU and dGPU but I can show the Manjaro hardware config

Oh, sorry, I just realized you had already posted the output in your first post.

Back to the topic at hand, you might want to check your monitor settings. My monitor connected to my Thunderbolt 4 port would go black every few seconds while set to 144Hz, but would mostly be fine at 60Hz. I finally fixed it by changing the monitor color setting to Native instead of Neutral.

I just set the second monitor to Native in color settings, has not blacked out yet but I have not tested it 100% yet. After copying some games over to my drive I’ll try some since that is the biggest one when it happens and not a fullscreen change resolution black out.

Did see that the Hz for the second display is 60Hz but main is using 59.98Hz, could that be a factor? Like them both trying to play catch up with one another?

No, it’s the same thing. Some monitors will report slight variances like that.

For instance, my two identical HP monitors report 143.98Hz while my MSI monitor reports 144Hz.

Right, alright but I checked the inxi -v 8 command after disabling the iGPU in BIOS which I thought would kick xfwm4 into using my driver but still reports as the same below, some games do work but slowly at times. Just wondering if I have to fix this or not since at times I do have either good performance in games or just a tank of slow frames.

Update: Nope, just saw it black out and come back once more so I think it has to be the driver not doing any compositing or enabled to xfwm4.

This is the hint why you have black screen. Without HorizSync and VertRefresh some Monitors do not work on certain ports. You have to edit it and add the information via Nvidia X Server Settings.
