Manjaro mate first installation

Hi,

I’m new to Manjaro and I wanted to install Manjaro mate on my laptop, I’ve already shrinked the windows partition to free up space for Manjaro, but when I choose the non-free drivers the boot stops at “Started TLP system startup/shutdown”. Meanwhile, if I choose the free drivers all runs correctly. But the problem is that my laptop has a dedicated GPU. It’s a HP omen 15-ce0xx with Nvidia gtx 1050 and Intel core i7-7700HQ.

So how can I fix the driver’s problem ?

Read this tutorial thread:

How does the first directive gets done? I’m new so I really don’t understand the procedure.

The referenced post is a tutorial.

A tutorial is a post that holds your hands - so I suggest you first read it and when you understand it - do the bartman

There’s an “Edit” menu option on the live installer boot screen.

Ok, I found it and followed the steps but I get an error while installing.

Step one

On step 3 the way to go is doing the partitions automatically or can I make it manually?

I made them manually. Wrote the stated on the fourth step, reboot the laptop and it did enter to the login screen. But after writing the password the screen got black and I could just see the pointer and nothing else. Then nothing happened, it remained frozen.

Maybe I wrote the kernel flags on the wrong spot.

Use this tutorial to boot to TTY directly.

Log in and update your system.
If you still have problems after reboot, keep reporting.

Try this one:

boot-menu-option

Otherwise, via the route in your screenshot, the option has to go on the end of the linux line.

And the

acpi_osi=! acpi_osi=“Windows 2009”

Goes on the GRUB command ?

As it is said

The step 4 is after installing Manjaro, so I must leave the usb connected to my laptop and do that again but now adding that ?

Well, i did that and wrote:

$ systemctl status bumblebeed
Unit bumblebeed.service could not be found.
$ optirun -b none nvidia-settings -c :8
bash: optirun: command not found

I’ve also followe jonathon advise to do the next:

$ inxi -Fxxxz

I did all that with the bootable usb connected to my laptop, because other way I can’t log in.

Edit /etc/default/grub and add those parameters to Grub commandline default entry.
Update grub after that.
About the drivers, you can keep your current (free) if you like, or install nonfree from MSM.

I’m doing this because I have problems installing the non-free drivers from the installer but I can do it with free drivers option without any problem.

How does I edit that file ?

So it would be easier to go with free drivers installation, and then install the non free ?

Would it be any difference?

Searching the forum, for example

Not really, as long as it works.

I tried free drivers installation, it run normally but the same thing happened again: got to login screen, enter my user password and the screen got black only showing the mouse pointer and then freezes.

Should I create another topic for the installation problems independently of the drivers ?

Or should I change the subject “newbie corner” to “technical issues”?

I guess not. The installation is not complete yet.

Have you done the grub parameters advice?
Have you updated your system? If not, boot to TTY and update with pacman -Syyu. Reboot and if it still happens, reboot to TTY again and run startx.
If it fails, post the errors and logs

journalctl -p3
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

I can’t boot to try, it won’t let me. When y login or when I try to boot to try it freezes again, permanently. I have waited like 10 mins and nothing happened.

When I turn on my laptop I get this error:

Read this tutorial

Boot to TTY editing grub menu.
Edit /etc/default/grub as advised, from TTY, using sudo nano /etc/default/grub
Reboot and see if it improves.
Anyway you should avoid freezing if booting to TTY and checking info or troubleshooting.
Post errors and logs, even from TTY.
See if there is a difference if you log from TTY with startx

I login via chroot with a bootable usb.
