after upgrading to 6.15.3.1 of Linux and when clicking the “shutdown” icon or issuing “systemctl poweroff” my system goes thru a shutdown but restarts, muchlike a “systemctl reboot”.
Dropping back to the previous version that had been working as expected, the system shutdown works as expected.
The working version is 6.12.34.1
Anyone else see this ?
Hi @lanepark,
Not that, but…similar. Mine doesn’t start up. So I can’t test the shutdown.
I’m sticking to 6.12 for now as well, seeing as that works flawlessly and it is an SLTS release so it still has some time ahead of it.
agreed.
No, but then I wouldn’t, as I typically remain with the latest LTS kernel. While this adds nothing useful at face value, it allows me to state something that many people seem to ignore for whatever reason(s);
Unless one has a specific need for the latest kernel release, there is no great advantage in not remaining with the latest LTS – especially if it works without issue.
That is all.
Regards.
I am experiencing the same problem with current kernel 6.15.3-1.
Just who, and with what, are you disagreeing with?
Your random comment seems highly out of context.
Did you misread something?
Regards.
I have a workstation and two laptops - I have no issues with shutdown both AMD and Intel based
corrected the sentence - no issues
- linux 6.15.3-1
- systemd 257.6-1
That is a long time since I have seen all branches at same level…

Same here.
shutdown now
and shutdown via KDE GUI invokes a reboot instead of a shutdown on 6.15.
Reverting back to 6.12 solves this issue.
For me, the GUI options, systemctl poweroff
and even pressing the power-button invoke a reboot.
But only on my laptop. My desktop works. And they are pretty similar in terms of software.
A post was split to a new topic: I have the same problem
Woops, sorry, I accidently switched tabs from arch to this forum.
I merely meant to state, that I encounter the same problem: System reboots instead of shutdown with 6.15.3-1.
Sorry again about that. At least, it wasn’t off-topic.
The next versions of Linux 6.15 has arrived in testing and unstable
You could try switching branch and check if you hardware is better supported with the newer versions.

With Update “[Stable Update] 2025-07-12” it is still an issue.
Try updating you kernel to 6.16:
sudo mhwd-kernel --install linux616
@lanepark you can try Release 6.15.6-1 · manjaro-kernels/linux615 · GitHub, which includes the patch series, which might break your shutdown, and Release 6.15.6-2 · manjaro-kernels/linux615 · GitHub, which doesn’t ship it. Let me know if installing 6.15.6-2 solves the issue for you.
Same issue with kernel 6.16 → shutdown now
equals reboot.
6.12 → shutdown works as normal.
is there a best practice way to install/switch these 2 kernels on an productive machine without risking bricking it?
If you install additional Kernels you can switch between them via the GRUB menu (advanced options). If a newly installed kernel doesn’t work for you, it’s easy enough to revert to the (working) one you were using, also via GRUB.
