Manjaro keeps asking Wifi password

Manjaro keeps asking me for the wifi password. I’ve tried this on more than one router, even on the Phone hotspot. on the other hand, I don’t have any problems connecting to open wifi and I can connect to the same router with no security. I think it has something to do with WPA2. here are my device specs.

Hi @Matinanjaro,

I think it depends on your file system. An encrypted on would need to be unencrypted first, AFAIK. But without without information, it’s all just speculation at this point.

Also, this is the extent of my knowledge as I don’t use wireless.

But see this anyway:

:bangbang: Tip: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Hi @Mirdarthos
as you can see I have provided system information is there anything else that you need to know in particular please name it specifically. since I’m not a Manjaro expert to answer your question in the way you wanted. I apologize for this inconvenience. and thanks for your immediate response

I’m unable to find any hard drive information there. Please check this. Please also provide the output for:

lsblk --output NAME,FSTYPE,FSSIZE,MOUNTPOINTS

Could you explain more about when it asks for that WiFi password, like what did you do before it.
Also provide what Desktop Environment you use: Gnome/KDE/XFCE/etc.

It all is related…

Seems to be missing some sections such as Network. Try inxi -Fxzc0

what @ydar said: you likely just didn’t copy/paste it all

to see what is happening in real time:

Have a log running while you connect and get disconnected:
open terminal, make it wide …

journalctl --follow
or
sudo dmesg --human --ctime --follow
or
sudo dmesg -HTw
(which is the same as the second one)

lsblk --output NAME,FSTYPE,FSSIZE,MOUNTPOINTS

Hi @TriMoon,
as I select the network there comes a popup asking me for the wifi password. then after 2 or three seconds, it pops up again asking for the same password(which I know is completely correct). this continues a few times and it is just gone. I checked the known networks and the profile is there but somehow it can’t connect.
before this, I was using Ubuntu. the last time I installed manjaro on my device I didn’t have such a problem.

Reading all the info provided, it could be:

  • Your WiFi signal quality, 2.4G is more solid in comparison to 5G for example due to used frequency.
  • The frequency band your AP is using, due to too much interference with other AP’s on same channel.
  • It could be the software you use to associate with your AP, wpa_supplicant or different one.
  • And ofcourse last but not least the wifi driver you use…

here is the output for journalctl --follow while attempting to connect to wifi with a password.

There you see the reason…driver problem…
Maybe you need a special driver for your WiFi chipset, instead of the general one…

Great now can you walk me through the solution?

Well i would have done it for you if it wasn’t this late on my side of the world, but you could use a search engine to look for problems with wifi and your WiFi chipset…

@TriMoon
thanks for your time and effort. you helped me a lot. I wish you the best of luck.

@Matinanjaro

I’m not at all sure that a new/different driver is needed.

I was more worried about this:

Feb 04 23:57:08 asus NetworkManager[517]: <info>  [1675542428.7343] Config: added 'auth_alg' value 'OPEN'

Config: added 'auth_alg' value 'OPEN'

This doesn’t look right.

It is very definitely not open - it should not be …

I suggest you delete the connection in the NetworkManager GUI
then create a new one.
Make sure to set the security to “WPA/WPA2/WPA3 Personal” in the security tab for the connection.

It should work automatically - but you should double check whether the correct security method is set.

Nice catch, i didn’t notice that one :+1:

… I had the same log running here - and just compared it visually, basically :slightly_smiling_face:

Ok here is the solution, apparently there was a driver issue with my laptop.
my wifi chipset is Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 I needed to install a certain driver with this command
sudo pamac build r8152-dkms
thanks to @TriMoon for helping me find the problem.
