Also, are there any guides for flashing linux ISO’s manually onto USB? dd & other tools seems to be backdoored from my observation or are doing something shady most of the time.

This sounds a bit paranoid to me. dd is a base command (provided by coreutils), hard to believe about any kind of manipulation. Here is a guide to write an ISO to an USB stick:
