Hello! I’m brand new to Manjaro, just installed today, and I somehow already broke my system trying to download a Nvidia driver.
The issue I’m having has happened to me before on another OS, and I managed to fix it there but here I don’t know how to fix it.
At the moment, Manjaro won’t boot, and I still have the USB stick I used to install manjaro with me, and I was originally thinking of installing Manjaro again but I have some data I already transported I don’t want to lose.
no need to loose that data - it’s presumably still present at the location you transported it from
if not:
transfer it back to there
re the Nvidia driver issue:
provide details and system information
use the package manager and the Manjaro dedicated tools for this, not some random download …
read a bit in the forum about the Nvidia driver and the issues people have with it
… tell us what you did …
Nachlese:
… tell us what you did …
I got ahead of myself and went to the Manjaro hardware settings since I already have used linux before and knew how Nvidia drivers worked, best to explain, and I switched from the Hybrid intel/Nvidia Prime driver, to the 470x driver I think it was called, and restarted my laptop for it to boot for a few then it gets stuck on the Manjaro logo.
mkay - you used the Manjaro tools
but still no one knows anything about your system
can you not just revert the to the state that worked?
I forgot to state out my laptop specs, I apologize, they are:
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile
Intel(R) UHD Graphics as my GPUs,
A Intel core i7-10750H CPU, and 16 Gigs of Ram.
I managed to find my data again after somehow losing it, I reinstalled Manjaro with proprietary drivers, I think I’ll need some help installing Nvidia Drivers this time, just so I don’t do the same mistake twice.
For that the inxi
command is more helpful
for instance:
inxi -Fazy
In that case I don’t know why you would even want to (re)install anything -
because the Nvidia drivers ARE the proprietary drivers
so:
you already have got what you want. no?

If you select the proprietary driver option when installing Manjaro, the Nvidia proprietary diver is installed.
I’m just used to downloading/redownloading drivers to make sure I do have my Nvidia drivers are set, I am brand new to Manjaro and everything, and I don’t really have a way to test if my Nvidia card is being used.
And yes true, it could be that the drivers are already installed and are set to work as normally, I just sorta stress on to make sure my Nvidia card IS actually being used, I apologize for any inconvenience, and thanks for trying to help out in my little issue I happened to get myself in.
that inxi
command in the previous post … would tell you
and if not you - someone else could explain it to you
or even more thorough:
inxi -zv8

Doing that shows both of the Intel and Nvidia GPU, the intel being “Device 1” and Device 2 as the Nvidia card, is that how it’s set to be?
sounds right, but:
no one really knows (from what you said) -
you are kind of encouraged to actually share the output
so that people who do know, know what the situation is

Like this? and if so, this is what I got from using the inxi command. And apologies again for not being very clear on stuff, I am new to this forum system and all.

Hello @oroange and welcome to the community
The way you describe your problem, sounds to me as the Plymouth bug:
Remove the word splash & quiet from the Grub command line options via editing
/etc/default/grub
Update Grub config file with
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Thank you.
This is as far as my knowledge about Nvidia goes.
People who actually use it will be able to say more.
@Kobold
I think the system works just fine as it is - he just wants to install something that is already working as it should
because he doesn’t know (better).

Possible true, i also have no experience around dual GPU solutions. But it still can’t hurt to remove Plymouth… because the fancy boot logo hide the point where the OS won’t boot.

You have a dual-gpu system. Optimus. intel iGPU plus nvidia dGPU.
You need to use the PRIME driver to access the nvidia.
As you have seen - force installing nvidia just wont work.
(I also dont know why you would go installing a legacy version)
Undo what you did.
And this command will force reinstall the desirable driver
sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

He already reinstalled - it should all be honky dory as it is.

I was also confused why he installed 470 legacy driver… we already have driver 550… but since i have no clue about dual GPU, i blindy guess there is may a reason behind this idea. (good to know, that legacy isn’t required for a working dual GPU solution)

Ah seems so.
Anyhoo. If @oroange is still confused here is a link
If they want a test they can use something like
glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'
(should return intel)
prime-run glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'
(should return nvidia)

I just blindly went to install a Nvidia driver, so I could have my Nvidia GPU as the main one, only to accidentally ruin my boot, I fixed it with reinstalling Manjaro, I’ll do my research next time …
