Manjaro freezes several times a day

Hi
before posting I searched for similar problems and tried the solutions, but it didn’t work for me. The most common solution was to make sure that it’s booting from an LTS kernel which was already the case, now I’m just alternating between the 5.4 and the 5.10
I know my PC doesn’t have the best features, but I just use it to watch movies/series and navigate the internet. Manjaro is installed on this machine since more than 2 years and the freezing problem appeared 2 weeks ago. At first I could do things before it happened, but now it freezes just after starting. Yesterday I had to shut it (with hard reset) 5 times before I could use it. If anyone can help me with this, I’ll be grateful

Sounds like hardware problem.

  1. Memtest86 (https://www.memtest86.com/) for few full passes (several hours). You need to have zero errors
  2. Prime95 (GIMPS - Free Prime95 software downloads - PrimeNet) run blend test for several hours, you need to have zero overheat problems, zero shutdowns or errors
  3. Some GPU stress test - maybe someone can recommend good one for Linux?
  4. Show us SMART results
    sudo smartctl --attributes --info /dev/sda

You can boot LiveCD to sun these tests, memtest86 comes on it’s own live media as well.

Thank you for your answer.
I just started the Prime95 tests. I’ll come back when I have the results for all the rest

Prime95 blended test allocates all free all memory it can find. Make sure you start it only when you close all programs first, so it can test more memory at once. Preferably from LiveCD.

https://forum.manjaro.org/t/kernel-5-10-7-freezes-after-some-time-not-nvidia-related/50158

Can you check if you can access virtual terminals using Ctrl+Alt+F2 or Ctrl+Alt+Fn+F2 ?, If you are able to access it, and want to return to the GUI use Ctrl+Alt+F7.

To stress test the RAM with Prime95 do a Large FTTs test.
It should succeed every loop it does, if you have an error at some point then you have at least one faulty RAM module.

Blend test does that. Anyway, prime85 runs on top of your system therefore it can’t test all of memory, that’s why I recommend memtest86.

Yes as the blend test does all the specific tests. I was talking to specifically stress test the RAM, as I guess the goal here is to test individual things to find the culprit. What would be the conclusion of a failed blend test on Prime95 (actually Mprime on Linux)?

Thank you all for the replies. So after I let prime95 run for a couple of hours, I had to stop the test because I needed to use my laptop and didn’t want to create a conflict or something like that. Well since then, it works better somehow. It still freezes (especially when I use syncplay to watch movies with my friends, or if I use zoom for classes). Right now it freezes during the end credits while until a couple of days before I had to hard reset at least twice during the movie.
I’m in the middle of moving places, I won’t be able to finish all the tests you asked me to do. Is it OK if I come back next week and don’t mark it as solved until then?

@Zuzup You can boot from a different kernel version other than 5.10 to avoid the freeze. The freeze is limited to kernel 5.10

@Zuzup
I have almost the same error. Direct freeze/extreeeemly laggy after opening the first program. I’ve tried any Kernel after 5.4 and nothing solved the problem.

However I’d also be interested in solutions!

Hi,
i had similar issues in these days with an old Toshiba L30 in which i upgraded ram to 3gb and cpu to Intel T7400 just for running Manjaro XFCE on it (fresh install, kernel 4.19).

It actually was pretty fast, but several applications were crashing with segfault (chromium , - jak webapps, - firefox with acceleration.force-enabled,wesnoth). I was experiencing complete system freeze using external hdd with NTFS volumes.
Changing kernel to 5.10, 5.4 or even 4.14 didn’t help.
Dmesg reported some overlapping pci BAR/can’t assign memory, syslog was not reporting anything.
Memtest86 completed with no errors at all.

I wasn’t expecting any stability from an old and customized system like this, so i was about to just restore the originall hardware.

Before doing this, i tried a fresh install of Debian Buster, kernel 4.19. Less snappy, same dmesg errors but i can successfully run all the applications that gave me segfault on Manjaro and i’m not experiencing system freeze anymore.

Anyway this sounds not as a solution for me, as i was able to run Debian with my old T2080 32 bit cpu. I actually switched cpu just to enjoy Manjaro on this machine too.

I would try again reinstalling Manjaro, with the help from someone in the community. Any suggestion?

Issue still exists in the latest stable kernel 5.10.13-2.

the issue is fixed for me in the latest kernel versions from 5.10 on

Bringing the discussion back to live, a few updates back this issue of randomly frozen mouse and keyboard started hitting me as well. If it happens its when I haven’t touched it for lets say 15 or more minutes.

On kernel 5.12.9-1

sudo mhwd -li

Installed PCI configs:

              NAME VERSION FREEDRIVER TYPE

      video-nvidia 2020.11.30 false PCI
       video-linux 2018.05.04 true PCI

Before I dump all system settings is this an isolated problem (just me) or have others noted the same or similar?

I have no freezes for days, and then I reboot for whatever reason.
