Manjaro Cinnamon Usb not working, not hardware problem, failed fixing attempt

Hi,
My usb 3.0 prots weren’t working in Manjaro, but they work in Windows (dual boot config on laptop).
The laptop has 1 usb 2.0 and 2 usb 3.0 ports.

So I tried to fix it, and made it worse. Now usb 2.0 port is also not working. -_-

This is the link to the post I had open on my phone when trying to fix it:

TBH: I missread a lot and may have overlooked an important detail in the console output of the user in the post.

The following is a step by step command review of what stupid stuff I did with comments and output where I still have it.

State USB 3.0 not working and USB 2.0 Working
// for comments
# for console output I still have in hand
==============================================
lsmod | grep xhci
hwinfo --usb-ctrl
sudo modprobe xhci_pci xhci_pci_renesas

============================
USB 2.0 stopps working
===============
sudo modprobe xhci_pci_renesas xhci_pci
// trying to revert while thinking modprobe replaces x with y
reboot // trying to und the changes
hwinfo
hwinfo | grep "renesas"
sudo modprobe xhci_plat_hcd
sudo modprobe ehci-hcd
reboot // trying to und the changes
sudo pamac build hw-probe
// googled modprobe
sudo modprobe xhci_pci xhci_pci_renesas -r
// trying to get rid off stuff that made usb 2.0 not work
hwinfo --usb-ctrl
sudo modprobe xhci_pci
//following suggestion in hwinfo
sudo modprobe xhci_hcd
// trying commands from the forum post again
sudo modprobe ehci-hcd
sudo nano /etc/modules-load.d/usb3.conf
//looking for file in post result: empty nano => file doesn't exist or empty
lsusb -t
sudo inxi -Fazc0 --usb

result of all of it:
not only is usb 3.0 not working
usb 2.0 has stopped working

I hope I can get at least usb 2.0 working again. USB 3.0 hadn’t mattered for 4 months so it should be fine.
Thank you to everyone who takes their time to help me.

The linked thread does not have a marked solution.

Your example commands only really show you 'modprobe’ing some modules.

modprobe does not persist across reboots, so that cant be the problem.

Did you make package changes or some configuration edits aside from the listed commands?

The history command or /var/log/pacman.log file may be helpful for you to look at.

Ok, strange, after reboot the usb 2.0 was still not working after loading into the user

this is the recent pacman log

I notice you have an EOL kernel, which can only be causing problems.

It appears you have booted into 6.6 at the time of your inxi, so you can remove linux65 (and any associated packages).

On a related note - you may have changed kernels around the time of your issue. You may wish to also try the previous LTS kernel linux61.

I just removed the old kernal with the manjaro settings manager. Does it also clear the packages?
I rebooted after and usb 2.0 is still broken.
As said the usb 3.0 issue was there for months since install, but 2.0 is new.
Both would be nice to fix.
While trying to fix 3.0 I had the a mouse connected to 2.0 which stopped working after the first modprobe and doesn’t work on the desktop since. It work in the lockscreen before entering the user though. So I am even more confused with it.

By the way thank you for taking your time

EDIT:
I just pugged my laptop in and for some reason in that case the usb-mouse works after getting onto the desktop, but when I unplugged the charger the mouse stopped working and after pluging it in again the mouse still didn’t work, even after repluging it.
So usb 2.0 works if the device is plugged in during login/boot and if the laptop is chargin? It is very confusing.

mhwd-kernel instructs the packages to be removed.
I dont know what further clearing you may be referring to … the package cache would not be cleared until some later invocation of something like paccache -rvuk0 or similar.

So it maybe have been an observed difference that did not take into account the plug?

Sounds like autosleep of the usb to me. Maybe from something like tlp.

Do you have some power management running like that? ex:

systemctl status tlp

You might also check your BIOS settings; see if legacy USB settings are enabled. Enabling those settings (if they exist) might (or might not) make any difference, but it’s worth trying. Cheers.

Sounds like you unloaded needed modules for USB to work.

A default Manjaro Linux system does not disable hardware - but dual boot with Windows may create unknown issues - especially if one does not shutdown Windows cleanly - that means disable Windows Fast Boot and Windows hibernate - always clean shutdown of Windows.

So, I deactivated Windows 10 fast boot and even though I do not have the hybernate option, made shure it is deactiveted.
Nothing changed.
In UEFI I looked for an USB option, but there were very few options in gereral and there was no option for legacy USB.

systemctl status tlp

● tlp.service - TLP system startup/shutdown

EDIT:
I was unshure if the manjaro settings manager will remove the packages when removing the kernel. Because i didn’t run any commands and did it with the ui.

And if you

systemctl disable tlp --now

??

So I ran the command, nothing happened, I rebooted with the laptop charging, the usb-mouse worked even after login, but stopped working when the laptop stopped charging and then refuses to work even when charging. But in the short time all 3 usb ports worked (regardless of 2.0 or 3.0) with the mouse.
So, I think we are getting closer.

That indicates one of two causes

  • flaky electronics (you already ruled that out)
  • power is cut to USB devices by a power profile of some kind

No - you are getting closer … we are merely providing ideas - you are the one to do the work.

You will need to go over your power settings and you may have conflicting settings provided by different daemons.

First look towards a GUI settings panel somewhere allowing you to adjust settings.

Then - I don’t know …

Judging from a search - that specific Acer model appears to have issues with USB on Linux.

Thank you for you help.

So averall I narrowed it down to TLP.
When TLP is enabled, it suspends the usb ports when not charging and doesn’t let them come back on.

But when TLP is disabled with TLP-UI, when I unplug the charger the ports keep working without any issues.

only disabling usb-suspend in the tlp ui does nothing against the issue, so maybe it is some other setting that overlaps or just interferes with the usb ports in general.

In any case I will keep looking into it.

Ok, maybe this is not completly ok , but in hwinfo --usb-ctrl is said “Attached to: #20 (PCI bridge)”.
I disabled Runtime Powermanagement for PCIe bus devices in the UI, and it seems to work. The Usb are not shut down in Battery mode.

I changed in TLP UI
PCIe → RUNTIME PM → RUNTIME_PN_ON_BAT → off

and now it seems to work. I will mark it as the solution after a few tests.

EDIT: I have now tested it with the usb mouse and an external hardrive, even after a reboot the problem seems to be solved.

EDIT2: I looked through the messages again @cscs had the right Idea, but when disabling even with tlp ui, it seems that it does not re-enable the suspended usb ports, but only stop it. So I couldn’t see it working since when the command was run the devices where already turned off. But when they were on, it would likely have solved the problem.
