Manjaro 2.0 and the 'User'

Hey there,

I live under a rock when it comes to following distro news and while I was hanging out with a friend helping them setup a meshtastic device last week for the first time (for us both!), they mentioned something about a bunch of drama going on with Manjaro, and they suggested I look into it.

So here, I am as a regular user, checking out a couple youtube videos, then finding the 2.0 forum post in announcements and wondering: is there anything as a user I need to know or do?

Thanks so much for all the work on this distro. I have been enjoying Manjaro on personal desktops and laptops with Gnome, and on mobile devices (Manjaro Phosh), and mostly enjoy the user experience.

No, absolutely not. I’m afraid — although this was of course to be expected — that the usual YouTube talking heads and Reddit denizens have only made things appear worse for the newbies because of their sensationalism, or because of whatever ax they have to grind with Manjaro.

Things will be changing in Manjaro on account of how the Project is being run, but the distribution itself remains exactly as it is. Updates will continue being pushed out as always — individual package updates to fast-tracked packages, and curated, bundled system updates. All of the things that make Manjaro great.

The user will not and should not have to worry about anything at all.

I’ll add that I have had 2 other distros quit. When that happens, updates will not come, but your install will still run. Eventually you should move on, but you will have plenty of time, like months even. Not that it will happen with Manjaro and I doubt it will.

Both the parties seem to know the importance of not disturbing the systems of thousands users. so I’ll be worry free for sure but keep an eye on announcements.
