Would you please point me to items that might be adjusted to make the movement of the mouse pointer smoother and more sensitive on a laptop with a 3840 by 2160 resolution screen?
In System Settings, the global scale is set to 200% and a few other items were changed such as the GRUB menu and setting Wayland and X11 to HIDI in a config file, and enlarged the cursor. The display itself looks fine now.
In System Settings, I set the pointer speed to 1.0 for the laptops built-in touch pad and that seemed to help a lot. This is not my machine but my sister’s (and I told her, of course, switching to Linux was easy) and her WIFI mouse was slow and, as move it across the screen, five pointers could be seen at times.
I tried this post and changed the Identifier and Product to match hers which is Logitech M720. That appeared to help.
My question is, Is that the correct approach? I’ve never experienced any such issues (and I use a Logitech mouse also) on my laptop or desktop but neither has a high resolution screen; so, I assume that is the primary cause.
Hi there. I can’t help you on this one but if you could provide the make & model of the laptop, this will help people search for solutions. Well done for getting your sister over to Linux & hopefully you have a solution soon!
Try pointer speed at zero instead, and acceleration none.
My desktop is 4k res at 100% (43" monitor). When I set it for 200% then increase the mouse speed from 0 to 1–holy cats is that thing fast and hard to position accurately!
I confirmed this on my laptop which is less than 4K but more than 1920x1080. Same thing, no matter if my screen was at 130% (my usual) or 200%. Pointer speed of zero is just fine. Increasing pointer speed to one is all but unusable. And I get trailing pointers, which is probably related to framerate. Mine would be too slow.
My touchpad is set the same–Pointer speed zero, Pointer acceleration none.
Also in my case, Logitech rodentia in both cases (M525 and POP Mouse) and Plasma 6.2.4-1.
I did a quick search & it seems that machine is a great spec for Linux - you can even buy it with Red Hat or Ubuntu installed apparently. What kernel are you using? That’s always a good thing to try - several LTS kernels, including the latest ones…see what happens & all the best! R
Thanks. Kernel 6.6 and 6.11. I got rid of that config file and set the speed to 1 and the motion of the pointer is fine. At zero, it takes a lot of movement of the external mouse or the touch pad to get much movement on the screen. With the config file, when the speed of the mouse movement is slow then more distance is required to get it to move.
However, for both of them, the icon of the mouse pointer is very fuzzy when in motion. I don’t notice that on my desktop but it’s very noticeable on her fancy laptop. Perhaps it has something to do with her video card. It came with an NVIDIA graphics card.
It’s tolerable and easy to stop noticing it but it reminds me of building a draggable element within a browser with JavaScript in the way there is that lag between the element and the mouse that is not present otherwise.
