Lutris not launching

Hi all

Since a few days my lutris is not starting - I have not changed anything regarding lutris specifically, but there were some system updates here and there and I have downloaded them and everything else is working fine (as far as I can tell atm).

So, first: here is my inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

When I FIRST started to check it in Konsole, it told me this:

Gtk-Message: 12:55:02.135: Failed to load module "appmenu-gtk-module"
2021-08-14 12:55:02,344: Magic not available. Unable to automatically find game executables. Please install python-magic

But I resolved this part at least, with installing these packages:

  • appmenu-gtk-module
  • python-magic
  • python-lxml

I have also tried this, but it did not work: python-gobject gtk3

How could I resolve this issue?
Otherwise, could I safely uninstall and reinstall lutris on my system without loosing some game-locations or anything else?

Thank you!

Read this: Swap - Manjaro

Then read this:

Especially the section What’s this upstream/Downstream business? and then file a bug upstream and include the output you’ve given us already!

:crossed_fingers:

Hi, first of all: thank you for your answer!
I doubt that the problem lies with swap, as my 32GB RAM never goes up that high (and as far as I know the swap only goes “in action”, when my RAM is full)
also I actively wanted to avoid swap as far as possible, just because (correct me if I am wrong): when my RAM is full, yeah it will crash or terminate my apps but when it uses swap memory it too will crash or lag extremely, so I cannot use my system either - so why the point in giving some of my Storage to swap, which will almost never be used?

I also tried now to DDG file bug lutris, with & without my output but unfortunately I don’t find any helping support :frowning: - or I did not get the message, sorry…

oh, just btw: today in the morning I tried (just to try it out) to run lutris as root with sudo lutris - it gave me the warning, but I clicked okay anyway, as I was curious. And as a root it did run perfectly (did not have the balls to try games or change preferences or something :stuck_out_tongue: )

thank you anyways already!

:+1:

Never run GUI user applications as root.

Have you tried lutris-git in the AUR (Arch User Repository)?

This shows you haven’t read the article as all your questions would’ve been answered there…

More specifically this quote from the article:

note: The largest server one of the authors of this wiki has ever installed had, indeed, 8TB of RAM

And that author, would indeed be me!

Thank you Yochanan

Thank you & yes, I read the article and also some more but nevertheless I don’t see the need for swap for my configuration - I also don’t get how an 8TB RAM server will help me here with my problem?

Maybe I just have a blockade atm and I am sorry, if I don’t understand something right, but I am trying…

I could of course try it with swap - but min. 6GB? is it really needed or could I try it out with just 2GB for example? I just don’t see the need for swap, sorry… :frowning:

Good luck! I’m bailing out…

Your Python seems to be broken. Do you use something for development like Anaconda?

What’s the output of:

which python

And:

echo $PATH

No idea what swap has anything to do with the subject at hand, but it’s good to have a small swap file (even <=1GB) just in case. I have 32GB RAM and my swap file is rarely if ever used, but currently DX12 Proton games have a memory leak and a 16GB swap file was needed recently. :scream:

Oh thanks.
yeah, it could definitely be python… I hope I didn’t crash anything with installing python-magic & python-lxml (but lutris did not run before either)
& no, I don’t use anything for development. ATM I mostly only use Firefox, Spotify, Krita & Steam(Runtime)…

Output of

which python

=

/usr/bin/python

and

echo $PATH

=

/home/mercedes/.local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/bin/site_perl:/usr/bin/vendor_perl:/usr/bin/core_perl:/var/lib/snapd/snap/bin

Ok thank you for your answer regarding swap! I’ll definitely try it out

thanks, seems to be the best for all.
:woman_shrugging:

Those outputs are fine. Maybe delete ~/.config/lutris/ and ~/.cache/lutris/.

deleting only these did not help, but on a reddit post I found the tip to also delete the .local folder - after I did that, lutris started again (my configurations are gone of course, but at least it is starting up again  )

now, when I start lutris it gives me this output:

2021-08-20 16:11:59,217: Starting Lutris 0.5.9
2021-08-20 16:11:59,240: No cores found
2021-08-20 16:12:00,169: Startup complete
2021-08-20 16:12:00,170: Using NVIDIA drivers 470.63.01 for x86_64
2021-08-20 16:12:00,170: GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
2021-08-20 16:12:00,170: GPU: 10DE:1F08 19DA:C530 (nvidia drivers)

What does “no cores found” mean? Or is it no problem and I am safe to go?
Just want to be sure, thank you for your help!

:hugs:

edit: seems “no cores found” is not a big deal, so I just have to get my environment again the way I like it, & reconnect all my games
thank you again for your help!
