Lutris and the default wine-ge-8-26 no longer works

After the update to a pure 64-bit version of Wine, Lutris seems broken. I can get it to work using Steam’s Proton, but this is not ideal.

For the default installation package of wine-ge-8-26, it just hangs on installing anything, and for playing an existing installed game, it complains about not finding rundll32 or so. I would post logs of this, but I cannot get it to do anything anymore so logs are not an option. On trying to launch anything, it just hangs forever.

Any ideas on a work around? Or is Lutris pretty much dead unless you install Steam?

Note I tried it on a secondary machine, same result.

Edit: I did get it to post some logs while trying to move another game to wine-ge-8-26:

Hi, since wine 10.8… (around begin june i think) they droped 32-bit support (32bit software will run kinda wow64 in an 64bit environment)
All old 32bit prefixes stopped running and must be recreated as 64bit prefixes.
3.3 32-bit Windows applications
wine-ge-8-26 is also very old. i don’t know much about lutris but i think you should check if you run the current version and try to get a newer wine-ge-.

I really enjoyed playing Dungeon Keeper back then. I think it was in the late 90s?

As @AlexBoldt suggests, the difficulty you are experiencing is most likely attributable to the recent changes in WINE.

This was mentioned in the 2025-08-30 Update Announcement - Breaking changes to wine and wine-staging under the Known Issues and Solutions section.

It’s recommended to always check these announcements for breaking information about updates that might affect you.

That version is deprecated in favor of GE-Proton with the umu-launcher backend. Set the default Wine version for Wine games to GE-Proton (Latest). I just played Red Dead Redemption 2 via the Rockstar Launcher with it yesterday.

Good to know. Lutris downloads 8-26 by default and then I manually selected one of the GE’s that I have installed in Steam. I will change that. Thanks.

Trying it with the mod to not only make it look better, but to also make it modern hardware friendly:

Running at 3840x1600 and it looks good compared to what it used to look like. Also has a ton more missions.

Thanks, I’ll give it a try. Just need to find the old CD; I think it was on one of the Gold Games Compilations.
