Low res after update - nvidia GT1030 - wayland

Hello,

I’ m on Manjaro / KDE / Wayland
And my graphic card is an nvidia GT1030
My actual driver is 575.64.05
Screen 4k
And all is fine.

If i update the system, I got a low resolution.

I asked Gemini that told me to ignore this packages

/etc/pacman.com

First things first,

There isn’t even a 575.xx driver in the repositories:

And according to Nvidia’s search the latest driver for that card is 580.173.02.

The only place I can find anything 575.xx -related is in the AUR:

Therefore, I think you have two options:

  1. Install the 580.xx from mhwd:

    sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300
    
  2. Or:

  • Remove the current 575.xx driver:

    sudo pacman -Rns linux66-nvidia-575xx
    
  • Rebuild the one from the AUR:

    pamac build nvidia-575xx-dkms
    

But whatever you do,

  • please do not rely on any answer given by any A.I.
  • as @Teo previously said, do not use IgnorePkg unless you know what you are doing.

That doesn’t match your driver or the driver Nvidia says you should be using (which as @Teo and @Mirdarthos pointed out is 580).

No an automatic update won’t do on its own. Things need to fit together. I presume you have removed IgnorePkg again. Then it looks like you are on an outdated linux 6.6 kernel. The minimum kernel version I would try with is 6.18. Then you need to align the nvidia drivers and tools to this. I think you’ll need

Consider upgrading to kernel 6.18 (LTS), or if you already have it installed along with kernel 6.6 (LTS), try booting with kernel 6.18 (LTS) instead.

While this may or may not provide any obvious improvement, it may have other advantages.

They too were using the Nvidia 575xx series driver, which is no longer provided via the official Manjaro repositories… I suggested using the nvidia-575xx-dkms driver available via the AUR as a possible workaround:

Thus far, the OP of that topic hasn’t given anyone the courtesy of a response, so it’s unknown whether it resolved their issue, or was even tried.

General information:

Dynamic Kernel Module Support (DKMS) automatically rebuilds kernel modules1 (in this case nvidia.ko, nvidia-drm.ko, nvidia-modeset.ko, nvidia-uvm.ko) whenever the Linux kernel is updated.

These out-of-tree modules interface directly with the kernel for modesetting, GPU and memory management.

  • Without DKMS: Kernel updates can break Nvidia drivers – the module becomes incompatible and you need to manually reinstall.
  • With DKMS: After each kernel upgrade, it’s automatically recompiled against the new kernel headers, keeping the display working across reboots.

To utilise DKMS on Manjaro, rather than using the nvidia package the nvidia-dkms package (and the matching linux*-nvidia-* headers) are used instead to achieve the desired behaviour.

The third option, besides using 575 from aur and closed source 580 from the repo, will be to use the 610 open source from the repo. (nvidia-open).

I had the same problem. The screen was reported as “none” and falled back to a low resolution. This solved it for me.

  1. Make sure in UEFI/BIOS that fast boot is disabled. This expose all hardware to the kernel at boot.
  2. Boot and open Timeshift. Restore to a previous working snapshot.
  3. Reboot and perform the update again. The nvidia card now worked for me and the screen was found.
  4. Open Timeshift once more and remove the snapshots that include your broken setup.

Or, if I have backups, I should do a fresh install, like this, I suppose all will be updated and maybe also work ?

I’d update, then before rebooting install linux618, then reboot into 6.18.

sudo pacman -Syu
sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux618
# reboot into 6.18

If you still have issues then install nouveau or nvidia-575xx-dkms

# first remove 580
sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia-580xx

# install nouveau
sudo mhwd -i pci video-linux

# alternatively install nvidia-575xx-dkms
yay -S nvidia-575xx-dkms

# or if you prefer pamac
pamac build nvidia-575xx-dkms

Reboot to test.

Also remove linux66, this can’t be done whilst you’re running 6.6

sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux66
