Low memory, I have 16 Gigs

I have played Mortsl Online 2 before, no issues. I have changed nothing, but the kernel shuts down all background app, only 1 is MO2. I have no clue, no background apps are running & info Center says I am using 4.6 is that ok with just KDE running?
Wow, MO2 blew up to using 9 when I hade the game started not even logged in yet. I use to play it fine.

But you did - according to your more recent posts …
(and PM’s to me …)

Ok, but how could that be at fault? Just was a partition issue. I meant didn’t change anything that should have messed with RAM.

I have NO idea about what you are saying,

… literally as well as figuratively …

It’s unlikely that this is because of my perhaps still tenuous grasp of the english language.

… use a few more words to describe your issue …

Sorry, I have played Mortal Online 2 with no issues, until a few days back ^ now I get a kernel warning about low memory. Have no idea what changed.

Try another kernel?

I did mention swap in the other thread. Do you have any configured?

I don’t think I’ve seen a current inxi -zv8 report from you yet; this may help (and will answer the above question).

Cheers! :smiley_cat:

Very unlikely.

Nor @Edward78 do we, until you do as requested, and supply more information. Information that has been requested, more than once.

Maybe you should test your RAM with memtest86+. Be sure to let it run for about 24 hours.

  • If it finds any errors, then that’s a guarantee that you have a bad memory module.

  • If it does not find any errors, than that’s still no guarantee that you do not have a bad memory module, because the failure could be intermittent.

I just booted up with kernel 6.6.03-1. I will test MO2 when everyone else isn’t sleeping.

So now you will provide the inxi -zv8 report, as requested.

Well, this kernel does it too. Now for Windows.

I have properly formatted your inxi output for better readability., sorry, I have a hard time remembering. Was changging it, then you did it before me. In Windows MO2 was fine. So, not sure.

As I suspected:

This means when RAM gets too full, the system has no alternative but to dump applications, as you describe.

I’d create, say, a 20G swap partition in the space you freed on your hard disk, add it to /etc/fstab and see how you go from there.

What changed? Everything was fine until recently, what is to issue with Linux, Windows is fine?? I thought with 16 Gig, I would be fine.Seems odd, so I just make it in KDE Psrtiton Manager & make it linuxswap in fs choice.

I have seen a significant increase in the “footprint” of my systems over recent times. This is to be expected as new drivers get added; particularly Nvidia-related lately with the open-sourcing of such.

Windows has its own way of managing its cache (swap), which it doesn’t exactly advertise to its users.

Even with all that in Windows it didn’t kick me out. Doesn’t look like swap was even being used.

Heres linux…

Just create the 20 Gig Swap partition for Linux.

Linux is not Windows.

3% disk usage does, to me at least, indicate that Windows is using some form of swap; whether you defined that or not (usually, not, in most user’s setups; I spent ages setting up my Windows systems to define such, when I still used that OS).

I made the mistake of removing the recovery partition from such a system once, on a severely storage-starved device, hoping to free up useful space, only to find that it was using said partition for its secret hibernate “feature” which they (again) neglected to tell us about and subsequently BSOD’d on me. (I’d better plug that thing in to charge the battery, before it gets pregnant).

In Linux, this needs to be defined either automatically during installation e.g. using Calamares, or by the person doing the installation at the time; maybe later, after the event, as long as the user has planned the partition layout.

Does Manjaro support a swap file & how do I make 1?
