Lots of applications refuse to start (VLC, SSR, Graphical software management Network manager...)

Hello friendly helpers,

I have several issues linked to the same problem but i dont seem to find a solution so i hope you all will be able to help.

Little by little the problem got worse: at first SSR wont start so i tried to start it via the terminal and have this answer: Bus error (core dumped)

So i restart the computer a few times until it works.

After that VLC follows, same error message :
VLC media player 3.0.13 Vetinari (revision 3.0.12.1-158-g6977abc430)
Bus error (core dumped)

Same workaround: after a few reboot it seem to works

Then i realize that if SSR doesnt start none of the video application will start even if i try to install new ones, none of the music application wont start either but everything else works fine.

After a while it s the turn of the Network manager to bug, it doesnt seem to recognize my ethernet connexion, same workaround a few restarts and it works fine.

Now it doesnt work at all whatever i do none of the video apps launch and the network manager never starts and now dolphin says that kdeinit5 seems be in troubles (10 error messages in a row)

The only way i found to have internet is by disabling Network manager in the terminal and activating dhcpcd.

Now a new symptom is that the graphical software manager wont start either.

Last week i did this :
sudo pacman -Scc
439 vlc
440 sudo pacman -Qdt
441 sudo pacman -Sc
442 find ~/.cache/ -type f -atime +100 -delete
443 sudo journalctl --vacuum-size=50M
444 pamac remove --orphans
445 pamac clean --build-files
446 sudo pamac remove --orphans
447 sudo pacman -Syu
448 sudo pacman -S plasma kf5

without success

I installed gnome yesterday same problems but when i restarted kde plasma everything worked fine again.

This morning again same problem so i decided to seek for help.

Thanks for reading me and helping me.

  1. Never run pamac as root: it has its own built-in authentication. (This specific command is no biggie though  )

  2. Does this also happen when you create a new user and log in there? (E.G. najib2)

  3. If that doesn’t “solve” the problem, Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…

  4. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

Ok ok i didnt know that

Yes it does, i created a new user when i installed gnome to test if it was a bug in the environment but it s exactly the same issue with the new user and in gnome.

I did  i m gonna check it again

that is exactly what i did. Doesn’t it appear?
here it is again :

sudo inxi --full --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

thanks again for your help

I missed the scroll bar! Sorry!

Stop running everything with sudo!
Only use sudo when you actually need it! No wonder your system has weird problems!

:scream:

What’s he output of:

smartctl --all /dev/sdc
journalctl --system --boot=0 --priority=3 | tail
xdg-open Path/To/Any/Videofile.mp4

That 's ok

Actually it s true that i often use sudo but most of the time is because the system ask me to.
Here without the sudo some informations werent displayed that s why i used it.

For example without the sudo:

RAM Report: permissions: Unable to run dmidecode. Root privileges required.

So you agree those problems are weird…

the xdg command worked

It took more than a minute to load, the dolphin window freezed and it was like the video was stuck behind it cause i saw like a glimpse of an image.

But then the video loaded and so everything starts now.
Do you know what could cause that?

Thanks again for your help

Please read this:

Please boot a Manjaro USB stick and execute as root:

fsck /dev/sdc1
fsck /dev/sdc2
fsck /dev/sda1
fsck /dev/sda2

When you encounter an error, look up the exact error message on your phone / another computer and fix it.

Once done, shut down, remove the USB stick and boot normally

Perform the xdg-open again on the same file. If that works flawlessly, try your other applications too.

I will do it directly.

Thanks again.

Will let you know when i reboot.

Hehe … Very nice tutorial, indeed it happens to me all the time…
Thanks again

After you’ve fixed your system (I sincerely hope you don’t have to reinstall), please read this too:
