The printer is connected to LAN with a static IP. I can print to it from my partner’s Ubuntu desktop. Until very recently I was printing to it from my desktop. This was also via the network connection. The printer sits right next to my desktop and originally I had it connected by USB and working fine (purchased in 2023). But back in July I had a problem printing and ended up talking to a very helpful support staffer at Canon, who got me to unplug the USB and then got it working over the network. Since then I’ve reconnected the USB as that’s the only way I can get the scanner to work. I’m pretty sure (but can’t be certain) I’ve printed successfully since reconnecting USB. I suspect the problem has arisen since doing a general update.
I’ve read so many posts and guides and tried so many times to re-install it my brain is a bit scrambled by now, but most recently I’ve deleted it from CUPS and tried reinstalling.
CUPS finds the printer and offers me two “versions”:
Canon TS6300 series, driverless, cups-filters 2.0.1 (en)
and
Canon TS6300 series Ver.5.90 (en, de, fr, zh, ja)
As I’d been reading all about IPP Everywhere I wondered if that was the way to go so I tried the driverless version first, but that resulted in:
Unable to add printer:
cups-driverd failed to get PPD file - see error_log for details.
(I’ll post the error log below.)
So then I tried to add the other, Ver.5.90 which seemed to install ok, though with the message: "Note:Printer drivers and raw queues are deprecated and will stop working in a future version of CUPS. " (Which made me think I was right to try driverless.)
But the printer shows:
Canon_TS6300_series Canon TS6300 usb Landing Canon TS6300 series Ver.5.90 Idle - "cfFilterChain: ghostscript (PID 112391) exited with no errors."
CUPS can communicate with the printer - it’ll print a self test page for example - but it won’t print a standard test page or a document from apps like LibreOffice Writer or Gedit. When I try that, the printer screen lights up for a moment, there’s a pause, then a pop-up on the desktop saying “Printing stopped. name-of-document.odt” And on the CUPS Jobs page it says
stopped
"Filter failed"
Yesterday I enabled debug level and so by now the error log is many megabites, but here’s a section which I think covers my recent attempt to install the printer:

One other thing I tried, after reading the solution in this thread
New solution for Canon printers at least is the following package: cnrdrvcups-lb I am good to go again now without having to use Avahi
was to try installing cnrdrvcups-lb. But pamac can’t find that package.
This is driving me nuts - can anyone help?
