Which browser are you using? I know Firefox has a download manager plugin and I think chromium and chromium based browsers may have one as well

I think the idea of having a Java application (IDM) to handle downloads which are already pretty much automatic is certainly a Windows thing.

Anyway, Firefox has Downthemall which is great.
Then we have our community software :

I recommend you Persepolis Download manager. It has extensions for several browsers, like Chrome/Chromium.
