Long shut down (~3 min) and reboot, plus boot problems

I have a mutli–boot PC with Windows, Manjaro and a few other Linux distros, but Manjaro KDE has been my main OS for 2 or 3 years. In the last six months or so two problems have shown up, which combine to make things really frustrating.
Problem 1: Intermittantly, Manjaro KDE doesn’t boot fully. The clock widget I have on my home screen is always displayed, but sometimes it’s just there alone on a black screen. Sometimes the desktop image is displayed (with the clock widget) but no task bar at the bottom of the screen and therefore no way to access applications. And sometimes it boots fully and then works just fine. In all cases, ctrl-alt-del will take me to the screen where there is a log-out, reboot, or shut-down choice, so I can reboot and try again. So far, it has always eventually booted OK, but sometime only on the fourth try. Which gets me to problem 2, which exaserbates the situation.
Problem 2. It is taking about 3 minutes for the system to shut down, including for the shutting down part of rebooting. (On reboot, once the system starts the booting-up part of the cycle, it goes quite quickly.) If I only had to experience this delay when I really wanted to shut down, it wouldn’t be so bad, but since I usually have to reboot a couple of times just to get started, it’s really annoying.
I’m hoping someone can help me.
I know you need more information about my system and I’m happy to provide it, but I’m not at all familiar with Linux commands and all the system reports or logs one can get so I’m afraid that I’m going to need someone to tell me what information to supply and how to get that info. My computer is an Asus desktop (- actually an under-the-desk tower). All the operating systems are installed on a 1Tb SSD so read/write should go quickly, and most of the data is a 2 Tb internal HDD (with movies, videos, music and backups stored on external HDDs.
Here is system information from Manjaro:

Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.22.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.85.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
Kernel Version: 5.9.16-1-MANJARO (64-bit)

Processors: 4 × AMD A10-7800 Radeon R7, 12 Compute Cores 4C+8G
Memory: 10.7 GiB of RAM

Please let me know what other info you need.
Thanks very much in advance for any attempts to help and for your patience with me.

can you please report

under manjaro , open a terminal

 inxi -Fza

kernel 5.9 is EOL

I don’t understand your last comment: “kernel 5.9 is EOL”

EOL means End of Life, it is no longer supported and you should upgrade to a newer version

Thanks. I just checked Kernel selection on System Setting and installed 5.13.11-1 and rebooted. But when I check the Settings Manager again, it shows 5.13 “installed” but 5.9.16-1 is still the one that’s “running”. What should I be doing to boot into 5.13?
Sorry I’m so clueless and really appreciate the advice.

can you return

sudo mhwd-kernel -li
sudo ls /etc/mkinitcpio.d/*.preset

you should have same number lines & version kernels

check also this return or any error

sudo mkinitcpio -P

Thank you Stephane. I entered all three commands and here is a copy from the terminal. I noticed some ERROR messages but don’t really understand them.

you can boot to grub and choose which kernel to boot into over there. To get into grub, you can just hold “shift” or “escape” (1 of these usually works for most) during boot. Then in grub you can choose advanced boot options and you will see all options with kernel names listed. Choose the latest stable (5.13) or latest LTS (5.10) and boot.

Then, once you are in, you can open manjaro settings manager and remove the EOL kernels. If you don’t want the hassle of keeping your kernel updated this often, you can choose an LTS kernel. I think 5.10 is supposed to be the latest LTS.

you have to suppress these files

sudo rm /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux57.preset
sudo rm /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux58.preset

then

sudo mkinitcpio -P

update your Grub menu , change this line
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu

sudo nano /etc/default/grub
sudo update-grub

then reboot , you will change with
Grub > advanced > list kernels to choose

you should keep at end
version linux54 , linux510 and linux513

sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux59
sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux511

Thanks Stephane. You wrote:

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu

I’m not quite sure what you mean. Change the line to what? In my /etc/default/grub file, there already is the following line

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=“menu”

Should I just be removing the quotation marks around the word menu? That is what I have done. However, sudo update-grub returns the following error message

[martin@Martin-Manjaro-Desktop ~]$ sudo update-grub
[sudo] password for martin:
/usr/bin/grub-probe: error while loading shared libraries: libzfs.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[martin@Martin-Manjaro-Desktop ~]$

I really appreciate your advice. Do you have any further suggestions?
Martin.

Thanks Audialche. Since I have a multi-boot system, it always goes into grub - or did you mean a different grub? Nevertheless, I rebooted a couple of times, first holding down the shift key all the way through and then again holding the escape key. In both cases, the boot went as it always had and I ended up with kernel 5.9 running. On the grub menu that I have, the “advanced options” are to run kernel 5.9 or 5.8 or 5.7, although neither of the last two choices work any more because I have removed kernels 5.7 and 5.8, following Stephane’s advice (just below your message.)

something odd , is there any errors after

sudo pacman-mirrors -c all
sudo pacman -Syyu
sudo mkinitcpio -P

There were no errors at the end, after running all three commands. There were intermittant errors while the first command was running and all the mirror sites were being listed. I don’t know whether those errors were significant. Here is the full “print-out” from my terminal:

it’s ok, command pacman-mirrors works well, 100 mirrors available for manjaro and you can use 95 - pacman use only first fastest for you

Thanks, papajoke and stephane.
After running the three commands suggested by Stephane in is most recent message (“something odd…”), seemingly successfully, I ran “sudo update-grub” again, but no luck. Same error message. Still stuck running kernel 5.9.
M.

You are using AUR’s grub-libzfs package instead of Manjaro’s grub. Why?

I am? I installed Manjaro about 3 years ago and it installed a new grub at that time. I can’t really remember the details any more. At one time, I edited the grub using Grub Customizer, but that doesn’t seem to work any more. Might that have introduced AUR’s grub-libzfs package? If you think I now have something “non-standard” in my grub that is causing the problem, is there a way I can revert back to the proper Manjaro grub?

you will in this case reinstall GRUB manjaro
before , keep any last USB iso update

pacman -Qs grub
inxi -Mza
test -d /sys/firmware/efi && echo efi || echo bios
sudo parted -l
sudo efibootmgr -v

Hello Stephane:
I followed your advice, entering each of the commands into the terminal, one at a time. I have pasted the proceedings below. But then I rebooted Manjaro and there had been no change. Still the same grub menu and still running kernel 5.9.

Is there anything further I should try?
