Logout does not work after KDE updated to 5.21.1-1

The good news is the KDE update was a success! I am happy the update retained the classic kicker menu. I like those favorites.

The bad news is that logout still does not work. Hmmm.

Does that also happen when you create a new user and log in and log out there???

:thinking:

Yes. I just get a black screen with a black cursor. The cursor moves, but there is nothing to click on.

I get get a tty terminal by pressing ctl alt F2.
So I at least can get to a CLI from there, do terminal work, etc.

I would very much like to get back the sddm theme and gui on logout.

An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)

:grin:

The output to inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width is:

Looking at the sddm log, there is this suspect line:

Failed to read display number from pipe

  1. In the future, when providing code/output, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text so that the output looks like this:

    instead of like this:

    (as that makes both our lives much easier)

  2. No need to do anything right now as I’m an editor here on this site and have fixed it for you already. However, in the future I might not see your post so review my edits by pushing the orange pencil above the post I just fixed. :wink:

  3. Once is enough! (you pasted it twice) :grin:

  4. Always provide the commands that you used to provide info:

  5. Does this also happen on Kernel 5.10? (that’s LTS too nowadays…)

This also happens to me.
5.11 kernel
Ryzen 1700
Nvidia 980
Will try to post log here later

Different kernel, different video driver, same problem. Seems KDE plasma related.

@Sarge

Please don’t post a log… Let’s see if we can get this solved with @deroberts1 and when it is, just use the same solution and :heart: his question and solution!

:wink:

@deroberts1

Try logging out, switch to a TTY and then execute:

tail --lines=25 ~/.local/share/sddm/xorg-session.log

and provide the output of that, please?

:thinking:

Gdk-ERROR **: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)

This is not all the lines it produces. I may not get back on Linux today. We will be manning sump pumps to battle the rising Ohio River.

Good luck manning the pumps!

:crossed_fingers:

Down to running two sump pumps. Progress! LOL!

I reported the bug to KDE. It had already been found by someone else. I added the results of the tail command.

Can you edit your answer with a link to the bug? Then we can close this question!

I found a similar thread here on the forum, where they mentioned that KWIN-lowlatency was the problem. I tried removing it, and that solved it for me.

I do not think I can do that, when I’m not the original topic starter?

I’m an idiot!

:man_facepalming:

Could you edit your post and provide a link to the other solution, please?

Hi Fabby and Sarge, I am not aware of any solution yet. I am hoping to hear back when they figure it out. So far though, no fix as far as I can tell. I tried logging out after the update yesterday. No change.

@deroberts1 This one

(I can’t find it, so we’ll have to wait for @Sarge to report back)
